Straight stitch foot for Brother NX-450Q

I decided to purchase a straight stitch foot for my Brother NX-450Q this past weekend at my local sewing shop (where I have purchased 2 machines, taken numerous classes and spent thousands of dollars on fabric, accessories and notions). After selecting the only straight stitch foot (SA108) from the self-service Brother display, I expressed concern to the sales clerk that my machine was not listed for that foot after checking the Brother website from my phone. The sales clerk curtly grabbed the foot, marched over to the NX-450Q on display with me following behind, quickly snapped on the foot and turned the handwheel a couple of times, stating that the foot fit just fine.

I reluctantly purchased the foot. At home, after referring to a few websites including PR message boards, I learned that my machine, like most Brothers, has 7 mm feed dogs and the SA108 is meant for Brother machines with 5 mm feed dogs. I should have purchased the SA167 -- which I don't believe the store even stocked.

So, should I take back the SA108 and ask for the SA167, even if the store has to order it? Though I suspect some of you here will say that the SA108 "will work fine" on my NX-450Q, I'm a big believer in using specific equipment designed for the device and assume that the contact between the foot itself and the feed dogs will be optimal if I use the SA167, rather than the SA108.

I'm really irritated that the sales clerk was so condescending, and in spite of the store carrying the entire line of Brothers, was not familiar enough with the different feet or machines to advise me appropriately. This condescending treatment, generally from veteran staff members, is becoming the norm for the store. I'm at the point where I'm thinking about taking my business elsewhere, even though the nearest equivalent store is about 25 miles away.

YES! You should return it. If they don't have the correct foot. If they do, exchange.

I went through the same thing numerous times with my Baby Lock Quest Plus. It's sort of the black sheep of the BL herd, not made by Brother as most are, but by a different manufacturer altogether. It has it's own line of feet and a vertical bobbin system. When I bought it, I asked for the stitch in the ditch foot to be included as part of the deal. They gave me one for other BL machines. When it didn't fit my Quest Plus, I looked up accessories on the BL site, which was very detailed and clear for each model. When I we t in to exchange it, I had the website info printed out in hand. No, the clerks were quite certain the foot they gave me "would work" and seemed quite annoyed with me, marching the foot they gave me over to the floor model to prove it. When 3 of them and several minutes of jamming could not get that foot snapped on, why then they believed me.

When I ordered a spare bobbin case for the Quest Plus, it took 2 months to finally get the correct one in (they first ordered one for the Baby Lock Quilter's Choice Professional-now the Jane). Then they charged me 3 times the price they quoted me! No apology whatsoever for the delay, hassle, or huge price increase. I paid it, since it only emphasized to me the need for a spare, if it was going to take 2 mos to get it.

And yeah, plenty of negative attitude with those dealings, even though the errors were all theirs. :(

Not a reflection on Baby Lock at all, as their website makes all that info very accessible and perfectly clear.

Take it back and tell the clerk it is not the right foot for model such and such.

Just because it fits does not mean it will work properly.

The owner of the shop should make sure his/her staff know not to interchange accessories.

This is why I do more on-line shopping rather than explain & deal with people who really don't know their merchandise.

Could you copy off the info that the SA 108 the clerk sold you is the wrong foot...and take the info with you when you go back for the exchange? Seems like that clerk wanted to sell what was in stock instead of ordering the correct foot...or even checking info as to what was the right foot. Very bad service.

Thanks all for the feedback and encouragement! I'm taking the foot back to the store today, along with my Brother Accessory book that indicates the SA167 is the straight stitch foot for my machine. Also figured I'd do my part to educate the entire staff by providing the store with a copy of this page:
