I'm heading out of town for a week and thought it would be a perfect time to take my Bernina 440 QE into the dealer for a checkup and cleaning. I was told the base price is $200 plus any parts or additional labor that may come up if they find anything wrong. Its six years old and never been serviced. The machine seems to run great and I take time to clean and oil it regularly. Is it really necessary to have a professional go over the machine if all seems to working well? The cost seems high to me.

The cost seems high to me as well, and I wouldn't do it every year at that price, unless it gets very heavy use, but since it's been 6 years, I do think it's (over)due for service. Can you shop around for a better price?

I have multiple machines, I don't get them all serviced every year.

I can't comment on whether the price you were quoted is reasonable as I'm in the UK. I had my Bernina serviced in January and it cost around 120, which I thought was quite expensive. In fact I only had it serviced because I'd taken it in thinking there was a fault with it. It turned out to be I needed a new foot pedal, but as the machine was in the shop, I thought I might as well have it serviced.

Before that I'd taken it in about 5 years ago as the buttonhole knob had stopped working and I couldn't set the needle alignment to the right. Before that it hadn't had a service for around 15 years! Although for a lot of that period it wasn't being used. Much as I love my Bernina, I've had to put it into semi-retirement. Although the machine is still reliable, the foot pedals only seem to last around 2 years. You can only get reconditioned ones now, they aren't repairable in the shop and I'm spending 70 a time to buy a new one. It's getting too expensive, so it's become my back-up machine to a new Juki. I haven't had that serviced yet, so I hope no unpleasant financial surprises await me!

So I think it depends on the machine. I wouldn't have mine serviced every year but I would consider every other year as it does get heavier use now making costumes for my drama group.

Some machines beep at you with an alert when its time for service after X-number of stitches. i think w/ Bernina it is after 1 million stitches. that seems to occur right around the 1-year mark for the average sewer. So many have and use multiple machines that you could go much longer. I definitely don't think its necessary to take it in each year and I don't do that. I just took one recently bc i've owned it 5 or 6 years now and like you, i just thought it was time but i don't think i got my money's worth bc there was nothng wrong with it. I paid $100 and thought that was high...but was not a bernina. I'd def shop around if that's possible. the bernina dealer here runs a special once or twice a year for the check-ups. i don't know what it entails apart from cleaning and oiling...hopefully something for what we pay!

I also think that is a very high price. Around my area it hovers around $90 even for the TOL sewing/embroidery models, but no where around $200. Also I don't have mine serviced every year either.

Rates in my area are lower, around $90.00 for tune-up, adjustment and oiling for a computerized machine. My dealer also offers service packages for 3 or 5 years which average less than that and it encourages regular servicing. I have my computerized machines serviced more regularly than mechanical ones.

Your 440 will give you a service message at about 3.5 million stitches. It is a good idea to have it done at that point. $200 is too much. For that machine in your area around $100 would be more in line.

That does sound over the top expensive.

Mine have not been in for years, mostly because I was not happy with the tech my dealer had hired.

I found a new dealer and that is who I will be using from here on out. She has two younger techs. One does the computerized machines and the other does mechanical and vintage machines.

I found my new dealer by looking at the website for my particular brand of machine and using their dealer search.

Good luck in finding a dealer that is not so greedy.

Its like a car the better you take care of it the longer it will last you. servicing yearly is dependent on how much you sew. If you sew many hours daily than I think is should be taken in yearly but if you sew ocassionally like me you could probably get away with ever 2-3 years. Servicing costs are dependent on what type of machine it is. my espire servicing ran about 170 if I didn't have a plan I think 200+ if its an embroidery machine. I get the service plans that are like 600 for 4 years covers parts, cleaning, mother boards and I can bring it in anytime, as much as I want which makes servicing much more affordable. I ruined a bobbin case and got a new one just handed to me. You should see if your dealer has service plans like this. My dealer does and he offers them on new machines once a year. I need to update mine next year as it expires in february
