Hi Gang, I found a Singer Starlet for my sister last year, it sews fine, but a bit loud. Anyone else have one and any ideas of how to make it quieter?

It's the nature of the beast.

You have a nice 70s machine. Enjoy it for what it is, warts and all.

Does this Starlet have its manual? I looked online for one...but need its model #...not just the name Starlet. Except one site stated that it's like the Singer Genie...so eventually found a model # for a Genie...and it's looks amazingly similar to a Singer 9420. The downloadable manual for the Genie is like a really bad dark photo copy...so the diagram for oiling is hardly useful. Maybe look at the its own manual if it has one or the singerco.com downloadable free manual for a 9420. Cleaning and oiling where you can may help.

But a tech told me that the moveable parts under the sm's bottom panel get loose after all these years which cause it to sound rough..so it needs a service to get back to some semblance of original function. And the old lubrication that has hardened over the years needs to be removed and redone during a service.

A foam rubber sewing machine mat may help as well even if it gets a good (much needed) service. Wawak.com has a fons and porter sewing machine mat on sale for under $10...and there is a discount code for $20 off of a $40 order for Sept. The code is THREADS913. I haven't ordered from them yet...making up my list over and over... ...but other PR members have and have been happy. One thing the others posted was that the discount doesn't show up on the online cart...but does show up on the invoice in the box with the items...seems odd but they said it always is OK.

The Starlet and Genie are the same model. It is a cute serviceable model as long as the plastic innards do not crack with age.

I have had two of these and can tell you from personal experience both were noisy, even when new.

Bestgrammy has given excellent suggestions. And a service may quiet the unit somewhat. Or not.

Forgot to mention. Change to a new needle...a worn out needle will make a noticeable punching sound each time it goes into the fabric. Also will get a similar sound when using a ball point needle or even a universal point needle when a sharp point should be used.
