Is there such a machine?

I know there are some multi-function machines that do top coverstitching and a slew of other serger/coverstitching type things. I have a Viking 936 and love it. It does a coverstitch and regular serging. Is there a machine out there that just does top coverstitching or top/bottom coverstitching? I would love something like the Janome 1000CPX but that looks like it just does the bottom coverstitch? I do a ton of athletic wear and stretchy knits and I'd love to branch out and do decorative top coverstitching and hemming.

Any ideas?

top coverstitch??? I haven't ever heard of that. Do you mean flat locking? where the looper stitch is on top of the fabric?

If you do mean flatlocking, then no I have never heard of a machine that does just that. But a lot of the higher spec overlockers do flat locking, maybe you could check your manual.

I think that one of the Elna sergers does a top cover stitch

If you mean like this:

The home sewing machine companies are not making them like that. As just coverstitch machines. But you could always get one that really does that, and goes into a table, that just did that, and had a separate motor under the table.

When I kind of want just that "look" but don't really need those exact stitch class kind of stitches, and all those threads and don't care that it looks different on both sides of the fabric, then I just sew with a 3 thread cover stitch (two needles and one looper) or even a 4 thread cover stitch (3 needles and one looper) on the wrong side of my fabric instead, then you got the looper thread on the top side instead. And you can use any thread you want, if you wanted you can use thicker or decorative thread in the looper.

If I wanted to do it all the time though and a lot, and both sides were going to be showing, then I guess I would just get the real machines that did that instead probably. So I would be looking for a machine that did class 602, 605 or 607 class stitches.

The other thing you can do, is just with the regular coverstitch, is just thread up a hand needle with any thread you want, matching or not, and just slide the needle through the existing cover stitches without even going through the fabric at all, and more do that by hand and get all sorts of "decorative looks" that way. I do that on small places on knit T shirts sometimes. Not very fast for yards and yards of it though.

There were Elna, Janome and Pfaff combo machines that did a top coverstitch, but were all discontinued. I'm not sure if there are any domestic machines currently available. There's always a secondhand industrial machine.

Yes, this is what I'm looking for. I was thinking industrial but then I saw the Pfaff 7874 and saw that it does those stitches plus more. I'd rather have a stand-alone machine that does just coverstitches.

And industrial machines are so specific. I'd like to have *some* flexibility with width or number of threads.

I think it was the Elna 845 that had the top coverstitch - good luck in your search I will be interested in what you find .

Yes but the home overlockers that sort of did that that and also had the rolled hem, 3 and 4 thread overlock and 5 thread safety stitches in them too, and a little thread wiper thing to make that happen, were so very expensive, you could just buy a real machine or several of them, that each did that one more single purpose thing a whole lot cheaper. That's my guess why they don't make home coverstitch only machines that way probably. If people really wanted to pay way more than it would cost to even get several more commercial ones instead, then I would guess they really would be making something like that.
