I'm working on a short jacket from Mrs Stylebook, Winter 2012. I'm not understanding the symbols associated with a shoulder dart. It has dashed lines and doesn't seem to be sewn. What else are they doing with it???

Anybody familar with Stylebook??

It sounds like it might be markings for a pleat.

Thank you for your help.

TGWGWS - I wish it were a pleat! That would make life much easier!!

Sandramary - Thanks for that website. I had forgotten about that one. I might resort to her translation service!

andye - Thanks for the Artisan Square link. I have poured over that thread to get even this far!!

Was finally able to take decent pics of the draft. You can see them here.

1. Shows the finished garment.
2. Shows the dashed lines for the shoulder dart.
3. Photos in the wrong order. This is actually the first step in adjusting your sloper. Photo 2 shows the next step.
4 & 5. Show another garment with the dashed dart but no dart in the finished garment.
6 & 7. Show another garment with a similar draft.

Anyways, after staring at other drafts with the dashed dart in the magazine, I realised what needs to happen. After you cut the flounce and side front panel away, you then rotate the dart value through the bust line and distribute it one third one side and two thirds the other. This gives you some ease to work in when constructing the garment. Proof however, will be in the pudding.

Here goes!

According to the Artisan Square link,
dashed lines are folds. Maybe that will help, somehow.

Yes, I interpreted the dashed lines the same way after reading that link but it didn't work. I did try rotate the dart through and easing the excess and that worked quite well. I sewed a mock up today and it all came together well. Yay!

Now to get stuck into the real thing and then of course post a review.

Thanks for your help.

Hi, I am glad that you already figure it out. I don't read Japanese but I use Mrs. Stylebook quite a lot. Good luck with the jacket! It is a cute design.
