I read the reviews of McCalls 6324 and also have experience making one version. The problem seems to be a common one: shoulder straps fall off the shoulders and the neckline bubbles to reveal bra.

I followed someone else's correction by adding 1" to the neckline. I triple checked the fit including making a muslin version and I was sure all was well. However when my lovely Lisette Collection Fall cotton sateen version was complete, I was shocked to learn that the corrections made not one bit of difference. In fact, this version seems worse than the first.

What can I do to fix this problem? I really love the fabric and since it is now gone and from the Fall 2011 collection, the chances of finding more are slim to none.

I appreciate your suggestions! Warm regards,

The Straps probably fall down because the back is the same depth as the front - raise the back neck line to a normal position and the straps should not fall anymore - or use bra strap holder thingees...

Ok. Thanks for your advice. To be sure I understand, I would take the sleeves off and shorten the straps so that the back is raised higher than the front then put the sleeves back on. Right?? I can almost picture it.

Do you think that I should add elastic to the neck line to correct the bubbling??

Here's the clickable link to your pattern. Makes it easier to visualize the problem.

Bra Strap Carriers. This is a small piece of ribbon or a thread chain with small snaps that is sewn into the shoulder straps. The ribbon goes under your bra and snaps back to the dress. It is common in couture. I use it in all my tank tops and any dress/top that has a chance of slippage.

Thanks Elena. My attempt to add it failed so thanks for the rescue.

Hi Kathy

I appreciate the suggestion and will definitely keep in mind for the future. These straps actually fall completely off the shoulders. I think taking up the back is absolutely necessary and I am also considering adding clear elastic to the whole neckline to try keeping it from bubbling. The more I think and view the dress the more I think that the whole neckline stretched when attaching the facings. I just finished a whole ensemble in knit where I tackled and won over this problem. I wasn't expecting to have it happen to this cotton.

As an aside, I wonder if cutting the back and bodice on the bias would improve the pattern for a future dress??

Can you sew a wider seam on the shoulders without messing up the armhole? I often have trouble like this-I have to adjust the pattern before making it by reducing the neckline-I apparently have a smaller neck/upper bust than most patterns are made for. Yes the whole thing might have stretched when you added the facings. Clear elastic might help too.

I picked the stitches for both sleeves and am about to do the same for the facings. I am not sure if I will separate the facings or just enough to adjust the straps. The straps are about 2.75" with the 1" added to attempt a correction.

I thought I had graduated to intermediate sewing but think I am still a beginner. Status change to follow.

Thanks Marie. I think I will try the elastic. I can always rip it out if it proves a bad choice.

This dress-pattern has a bcentreback-seam and a centre-frontseam
Is it possible to adapt the dress there?
