I was under the impression that Simplicity and New Look were going to stop making patterns.

Was at Fabricland (Canada) today - haven't been there for a while due to leg operations - and was surprised to find all the drawers full and new books out.

Asked one of the sales ladies if they were going to stop stocking S and NL patterns and was told there are no plans to do so.

Don't think I dreamed up the idea that they were going out of business but must have missed later news on this - so can you clue me in please?

I don't live in Canada, but this recent PR discussion (Attention Ontario Fabricland Patrons) seems to indicate that Fabricland (some Fabriclands??) are/will/might choose to stop buying patterns from Simplicity/New Look.

I live in BC and was told this too by a clerk at Fabricland.
Maybe it's is just some stores.

Go back to the list of Pattern topics and look down about 10 and you will see "Fabricland (Canada)....." and a ton of messages and info on this subject.

What region are you in? The Kitchener, Welland, Whitby, Oshawa, etc. group of Fabriclands are still carrying Simplicity and New Look. Or that's what they've been saying -- so far the Kitchener store hasn't had the new book in yet, and it's been online for quite a while. Maybe it's out now -- not sure.

They aren't going out of business -- they've just wildly hiked the price for Canadian distributers, so the main Fabricland franchise (and maybe some others) have decided to stop carrying them.

Yes, have a look at that discussion someone mentioned -- "Fabricland (Canada)....." That was the main discussion about this. Everything you want to know (and probably more!) is in there.

Thanks - I remember reading that topic and now realise that it was price that caused some stores to discontinue

I am in the Whitby area - don't live there but that's where I shop for fabric when not on-line.

The store in Whitby is one of the "independent" stores - a little teeny bit more up-scale sometimes than regular FabLand (or used to be).

My visit there on Friday did not inspire me to buy anything other than the quilt batting I needed.

This store is carrying the full Simplicity- I did buy one pattern and the price was $7.75 with 25% off as I am a Elite Card holder. I do not find this terribly out of line for a pattern but have never been a big buyer of S/NL so do not know if this new price represents a huge increase in price- I tend to doubt that

Thanks - as I just said the store in Whitby is still carrying the full line of Simplicity and New Look and the sales clerk kind of looked kind of "what??? when I asked if they were going to discontinue - obviously not something thought of in this store.

Will check the Ajax store to see how that one is doing also when next in Peterborough - two stores there,

Ajax and Peterborough are part of the main Fabricland franchise, which definitely is no longer going to carry Simplicity and New Look. (They were very adamant about it, as you'll see in that discussion.) They're selling off what they have in stock, but that's it.

The person you spoke to in Whitby may not have known all this was going on, but I spoke to someone at another one of the Ontario independent stores (Kitchener), who said they were keeping an eye on the situation -- they're still selling Simplicity and New Look, but they will be watching how customers respond to the new higher prices.

The newest Simplicity catalogue (Autumn -- NOT Early Autumn) still hasn't arrived in the Kitchener store. I just called them because I have to go to KW today and was going to get one of the new patterns if they had the newest catalogue. The new catalogue has been out online for a month or maybe almost two, so this is really weird.

Anyway, I mention this because I'm watching to see what prices the patterns will be when they do arrive. The main franchise said the price hike would have made it necessary for prices to go up by 160% (!). So, I suspect the new prices haven't shown up yet at the independent FL's.

Maybe the price increase hasn't hit yet.

Do you think what I paid for the pattern is a lot higher than norm?

The store seemed right up-to-date with Simplicity - drawers full of new patterns and as said the person I spoke to seemed rather surprised at my question

A hike of 160% is unreal!
