I went to purchase a new Bernina. I really familiar and love the older models 200e, 640e, and 730e. I was nervous to purchase a retired machine, would parts be available if it broke, would new technicians be familiar with it for routine maintenance, would new features be supported.
So I started looking at the 580 because it is offered at the same price as the showroom 730 demo. I was assured it was a great machine but I realized it doesn't have 16/4 directional sewing, it has 187 decorative stitches (80 less than the 730), no history stitches, and takes embroidery designs as .exp. I tried to ask around to see what the difference in embroidery speed because I think the 730e is faster. Also I did a tremendous amount of resizing and no one will confirm if the 580 will let me resize embroidery designs past 20% ..so if I am doing lettering on a beach towel and then on a dinner napkin can i use the same font and scale it up and down past 20% and not have holes..I know that the graphics and screen are different kind of bothered that it doesn't have the measuring bar on the top and bottom of the default screen but then the 730e takes so long to start up....rug
I do a lot of decorative stitching, and embroidery of names and simple designs not so much overlay. I can't figure out which machine to get because no dealer will answer me when I say is the 580 equivalent to the 730? I have pointed out obvious differences I just thought if Bernina was retiring a machine they would give a guide on what replaces what....

I think it replaces the 640. If your dealer doesn't have the answers to your questions, I might be tempted to find another.

Actually between the two. It doesn't have directional sewing but does have the tutorial, creative consultant, adjustable buttonhole width and spacing, led lighting and a bunch of other things. The 640 doesn't have the last few mentioned.
So many projects, not enough time

For some things-- multi directional stitching, the replacement would be the 780 or possibly the 830/880
