While working with polertec power stretch fleece I have been finding that the seems are buckling and looking warped as I sew. I am using an overlock stitch, polyester thread, ball point needle and a computerized machine. The warping tends to loosen off with wear but I want to make clothes for people other than myself so I want them to look nice as well. Also the buckling gets worse when I topstitch the same seams.

Thanks so much!

I use a stretch needle for all fleece and I find I need to lengthen the stitch length as well. I don't use an overlock stitch on my sewing machine -- I use a serger if needed but usually am sewing with a straight or small zigzag stitch.

What machine are you using?

Longer stitches. 4 thread serger stitch and use the differential feed to lessen the stretching.

Two things you might try; reducing the presser foot pressure and a walking foot.

With the serger, you have the options of the presser foot pressure adjustment and differential feed.

Work with scraps to perfect the techniques.

I dug out some stretchy fleece pants I had (failed project) and installed a size 12 needle on my industrial walking foot machine. Dunno if it will help since it is only a straight stitch machine, but I captured the test on video for you to see the results of using a walking foot.

Are you usiing a serger or a sewing machine?

The reason I ask is that very often--very often--those specialty stitches on sewing machines do what is called 'building in too much thread' into the seam, and the result is wavy, dense seams. Serger thread is much lighter, so this problem seldom pops up with sergers.

On fleece, I use a sewing machine with a nearly straight stitch, just the slightest zigzag, to provide a little stretch, and only overcast or serge the edges to flatten seams that are too bulky if left alone.

You make great videos. Looks like you have perfected the stitch.
