I have friend who's in Canberra who can bring me some patterns.

Is there an optimal number of patterns to shipping price ratio? I know some patterns are heavier than others, just wanted to see if anyone has figured out a general guideline. I don't mind ordering a few more to get a better deal.

I don't know exactly how shipping is done for within Australia but the international shipments seem to be done in sets of 4 or 5 patterns per envelope for a fixed price per envelope you need. You can figure out the Australian shipping rates by trial and error by making a list of every pattern you want and then going through checkout for your friend's address but not finalize the order, that way you can see the shipping cost. Then you can go back and take out one pattern at a time and see how the shipping rates change. Or you could email them directly and ask; I haven't tried contacting them yet but people have said that the customer service is very helpful and responsive so that might be your best bet.

Yes, I did send them a note already.. just too impatient waiting for a response, ha ha.

I split an order with a friend last time, 8 patterns came to $45 for shipping, which, as an occasional order, is doable but still very steep.

I just received my first order from StyleArc. I ordered 4 patterns and got the freebie for the month. So my order was a total of 5 patterns and the shipping was $11.53 USD. I think they pick up the shipping cost of the free pattern as the amount claimed on the customs / airmail form stuck to the envelope was $18AUD.

I do think it's based on weight and what will fit into the envelope vs. a box. I wonder if anyone here has received their patterns in a box i/o an envelope.

Some patterns are bulkier than others, and therefore fewer would fit into the same size envelope. But you can easily add / subtract patterns to your shopping cart and it will calculate the shipping for you. This number worked for me this time, but if I had ordered, say a coat or a jacket pattern that was heavier, the number of patterns for that amount of shipping might be fewer.

I've spent more $$ on the same total number of patterns from independents shipping from here in the US!

I sent them a note about sizing 2 days ago and haven't heard anything yet. Are they normally slow at responding to questions?

Not normally, but it has happened to me. I'd just send a reminder/follow-up. Usually, they're pretty good at responding quickly.

I read a comment clothingengineer (Ann) posted on Stitcher's Guild that usually they are very busy at the beginning of the month.

I will have to play around with their site. Ofcourse most of my favorite patterns are the heavier things like coats/jackets!

Ming, my last order was 5 (plus the freebie) with postage of $12.75 in a large envelope; I think the postage went up after 5.

Is there an optimal number of patterns to shipping price ratio?

I've been purchasing from Style Arc for three years now and the short answer is no. This said hopefully I can still help a bit.

The patterns are sent within Australia by what is known as "parcel post". Parcel post for standard size items like sewing patterns is based purely on weight, and the postage rates increase at a steady rate with a jump at basically every one kilogram.

When purchasing I recommend you just play with the postage on the Style Arc website. That is just keep adding patterns and see what the actual postage is.

Here is the price chart from Australia Post, if it helps at all. Canberra is zone N2. As you can see Red Dragon's postage rate means her five patterns weighed more than 0.5kg but less than 1kg. It sounds like the sixth pattern tipped her over 1kg. I roughly weighed some of my Style Arc patterns and 1kg seemed to be about five to six patterns. HTH

Thank you Tracy and Belinda for sharing information about the Australian shipping rates. I will have to play around with all my options this weekend. It turned out my friend is in Melbourne this week and tried to get ahold of StyleArc to see if they have patterns to buy "off the shelf" so I can save money on shipping. Unfortunately she couldn't reach them when she called yesterday morning. I told her I didn't think they have printed patterns ready to go, but it was sweet of her to try.

I appreciate all the suggestions from everyone!
