I'm making vogue 8787 view B and it instructs me to complete the bodice then attach the lining and fashion fabric then proceed to add the waistband and skirt.

I didn't/am not muslin'ing (I rarely do) and need to double check fit as I go. Can I construct dress and lining separately (for the most part) then sew together?

Thanks

I'd probably add lining last, it is simply easier to deal with less fabric

I don't see why not. I usually follow that order if I'm fitting as sewing the garment itself. Come to think of it, I always do it that way, but I'm a habitual instruction ignorer. Every time I try to use them I seem to get in trouble.

I LOVE "habitual instruction igmorer"!! :)

Thanks! The bodice looks a little on the large side on Lily. But of course her measurements are the same as mine but distribution is a bit different. I really should pad her out

I padded out my dress form, Dumb Debbie, to match my "distribution". Yes, she is more helpful that way, but I so detest looking at her protruding belly! LOL. I keep her lower half covered with something attractive when I'm not using her.

I use instructions as a guide, but don't necessarily sew the pieces in the suggested order. Sometimes it makes more sense to do it your own way, especially when there are fitting issues.

It seems as if who ever writes the instructions speaks English as their second language. I use the instructions as a sort of guide, get annoyed and do it my way.

I think most instructions assume the pattern fits and you are just assembling. However, whenever I take sewing classes, we discuss basting and fitting as part of construction. Also often making larger seam allowances, again for fitting. I just took Sandra Betzina's pants construction class. I should look at the pattern instructions and see if she followed them

I read through to check for any quirks or ideas I might get, then I do whatever makes sense.

Well I constructed the bodice and liked the fit. And then...

I added the skirt. And suddenly looked like an oompa loompa. :-( I'm assuming the positioning of the waistband is the culprit. But it makes my lower part of stomach pooch out. I'll finish it soon...but I moved on to a knit blazer to restore my self esteem!
