My friend is looking to get a sewing machine for herself for Christmas, budget is $800.
She wants to do clothing repair for her children, and make home dec items like pillows and curtains.
It's been a long time since I was a beginner, so I need suggestions that would fit her budget and experience level.
I will be available to help her with sewing.
Thanks in advance for your help; I know PR members can always generate good ideas!

Wow $800 will get her alot of machine. I love Janomes/Elnas and Brother sms and there are quite a few available in that price range. Does she want a mechanical or a computerized? There are so many choices available. My dealer always recommends an Elna electronic as a starter machine. They are awesome and easy to use. You might be able to get a Pfaff Ambition (I never owned one but looked at them) too for that. Can you take her to some dealers so she has an idea about what she wants?

It has probably been along time since most of us were beginners and that should not limit what the machine can handle.

Take her on a girls day out and visit as many SM dealers as you can find. Let her tell them what she is interested in doing and they will help her find models within her budget, demo and then let her try.

Make notes for her and then have lunch, relax and discuss which dealer she was the most comfortable with and go from there in the choice.

That way it will be her choice and not yours or ours.

While on the girls day out, don't forget to do lunch. Then you can comfortably sit and go over the machines and see what she likes and does not like.

I really enjoy quilting. I love to play with fabrics, colors and pictures. I recently discovered how much fun applique can be. As I love making pictures, landscape quilting can be challenging, but seeing the picture come to life is so rewarding.

Didn't I just type that? Kindel can be tricky sometimes, but not this time.

I vote for a Pfaff. She could probably get the Ambition essential for around $600 or the Ambition 1.0 for $800. The IDT is just so nice to have.
