Hi,
This may be the best place to post my question about the compatibility of Bernina embroidery unit.
I got a gently used Bernina Artista 730 for a steal but it is not coming with an embroidery unit. I already have a Brother 770 that I like, but space is becoming sparse in my sewing room so I was thinking of getting an embroidery unit for the Artista.
I called my Bernina dealer and was quoted 999$ for a new embroidery unit. For this price, I'm better keeping my Brother. But then I tought I could hunt for a gently used one; I'm in no hurry, so I could keep my eyes open.
I found an add where the seller was claiming that his/her unit was compatible with the 430/440/630 and 730. Make sense to me, because they look the same, but is true? And how about one for an Artista 200E? I found one for a very good price...
Thanks for any advice about this matter.

Steer clear! The unit is only one aspect of cost. The machine uses a Bernina format, Bernina software and was created to work by cabling it to a Windows XP computer. Embroidery has progressed to using 3rd party compatible software on current PCs and Macs transferred over USB devices.
Unless you are prepared to embroider within the older format limitations you will regret it.

I have the 440 and the 730 and the embroidery units are the same. When I bought the 730 I sold my embroidery unit because I didn't need two of them. The difference is that for the 440 embroidery unit to work you must connect it to a laptop computer and use Bernina software and the dongle. For the 730, the software to run the unit is inside the machine therefore a computer isn't necessary unless you want to digitize or buy other designs which can be loaded on a USB thumb drive in order to get them into the 730.

Thanks for this information. So if I understand correctly, unless I find an newer version of an embroidery module (a one that don't require a software and dongle) I'm better stay with my Brother...

No, if you are using it on the 730 you don't need the software and dongle. The software is in the sewing machine already. You will have to calibrate the embroidery unit to your machine. I have to do that on mine occasionally. Just make sure you have the correct bobbin case. To embroider you need the bobbin case with the little curly thing on it. That keeps the tension coming from the bobbin correct in order to embroider.

The 730 embroiders beautifully and you can do lots of editing in the machine. It is a little slower in the editing than some newer machines because of the older Windows OS in the 730. Berninas use either ART or EXP format and the Artlink software SharonSews links to is very handy for manipulation of designs. It doesn't digitize from scratch but I've never needed that personally. YMMV of course!

From what I red on the manual, I think I can easily combine design and fonts directly on the screen of the 730. That would be really, really usefull for me, because I'm embroiding mostly on my kids clothing and I would love to put some cute words or their names with the design.
With my Brother 770, I have to use embird to create a new design file. It`s quite easy, but it takes time, and I don't have that much...
