Hi Ladies,

First off - this is a long post, so grab a cup of coffee, take a break, and thanks for reading!

I recently became aware of a great charity called "Days for Girls" (their web address is www.daysforgirls.org, Days for Girls) , and I have committed to helping our local chapter with this years cutting and sewing event. In a nutshell, the organization is trying to eliminate the huge loss of days from school and work that women and girls in 3rd world countries suffer due to lack of (or expense of) sanitary supplies.

What they do is use 100% cotton and high quality flannel to create sustainable hygiene kits to allow these girls to continue to attend school and work with DIGNITY during that time of month. (Some girls are so desparate they use leaves, newspapers, corn husks...anything they can to avoid missing that 2-3 months of school per year. ) The kits are then distributed (along with training in their use) by volunteers and relief organizations in their countries. Washable supplies seem "ewwww" to us, but after spending some time looking at the videos and reading the stories on their website, you will understand the joy these girls show when they receive their kits and realize they can attend school EVERY DAY now!

So - want to help me help them, and bust your stash at the same time? They need good quality (the kits are made to last for about 3 years) 100% cotton and good quality flannel for making the kits, plus several other items that will be purchased here locally. I told them I would check with all my wonderful sewing sisters to see if anyone has fabric they want to donate!

A few notes:
*The fabric must be 100% cotton for absorbancy purposes
*The wilder/darker prints are better, as the fabric will hide any stains, but lighter colors are usable too.
*You can send the fabric to me and I will pre-wash it before the cutting day, or you can send it direct to the local chapter here if you prefer. (Private message me and I will send you my or their address).
*If you live in the US and the cost of shipping is a barrier let me know. I am budgeting $200 for this event, which I will use to buy the waterproof barrier fabric and panties needed for the kits, but if you have a lot of fabric to send and mailing costs are a barrier, I can use part of that to help cover shipping if you touch base with me before sending.
*Longer yardages (over one yard) are best so the pattern can be tesselated to use it to its max, but we can also use cuts as small as a half yard.

The first cutting date is October 19th, the second will be October 26, and I am going to be doing cutting at home during the week as well.

Anyone want to stash bust in this way, send me a message! I told Linda, the organizer, that I know a community of great women online and would see if we can round up some fabric for her.....any fabric donated frees up money to purchase the other components needed for the kits! If you can help the ladies organizing the cutting and sewing drive will be thrilled, and I will be very grateful as well!

Thanks for posting this. Mama pads are one term for these types of reuseables and are a grass trend in the US as well.

Subject: Picture of the Days for Girls Kits.... Date: 10/9/13 9:35 AM

Hi Everyone,

I came across a picture showing what is included in the Days for Girls kits, here is the link: What is in a Days for Girls Kit

This kit shows solid flannel liners, but the prints can be as wild and crazy as you like, everything gets used.

Thank you to those who have offered to help so far!

Tina

Hey -

I just wanted to give a shout-out to those of you who have sent fabric in response to this posting! I've received some great flannels and cottons from LindyAnn in Kansas, Sauvage in Massachusetts, Heather in California, and a couple more are on the way from Laura, Estikoen, Nancy and Ming.

Thanks so much ladies, and I'll post pictures after the sewing event!
