I recently saw a jacket by Joseph Ribkoff in a boutique and the design has stayed in my mind for several weeks. The stitching technique used at the midriff added style and gave it an elegance. It is like tucks that form a diamond type pattern. Does anyone know what the stitch is called or how to do it?

See the Ribkoff sweater image on my Pinterest Sewing Room page.

Hi Ashford! It's smocking. Victory patterns has a tutorial for a similar smocked design here: You can also search on "modern smocking" or "Canadian Smocking" to get other interesting takes on an old needlework embellishment. It seems to be coming back for other than little girls' dresses!
