So, my favorite rtw dress and some of my favorite tops are identified on their tags as polyester/lycra blends. What is this fabric? It's shinier than what I think of as most knits, but not shiny, if that makes sense. (I like it because it looks a little more office appropriate than regular knits.)
I just got the Cake Red Velvet dress pattern, and this is the type of fabric I'd like to make the dress out of, but don't know what to look for.

For example, here's a Dress Barn dress with a similar fabric content to the favorite http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/belted-scroll-print-cowlneck-dress/101607402/198, and a top http://www.dressbarn.com/detail/drape-neck-top/101152763/150 that shows the shinier but not shiny characteristic.

Help?

Poly/lycra could be all kinds of weaves and weights. The top you linked to looks rather like matte jersey, which tends to (paradoxically!) have a bit of a sheen to it.

The fabric you're talking about is probably ITY jersey. ITY stands for Interlock Twisted Yarn and the weave of the fabric is jersey, I have a dress I bought about two years ago from Dress Barn in this same type of fabric. To me, the fabric is much better than slinky because it's thinner, but stills "floats" over the body and looks great on. It also travels just as well. ITY is available in different weights at most online fabric stores. Although it's not a natural fiber, there is the advantage of having lots of geometric and colorful prints available to choose from which make it an excellent choice for your wardrobe.

My guess was going to be ITY jersey, too! That's a fabric name used by seamstresses and fabric stores; you won't find it in catalogues or on clothing labels. I'm with Judy--it's a fabric I really like for dressier (work-appropriate) tops and dresses, and I *vastly* prefer it to clingy, show-every-bump-even--imaginary-ones rayon jersey.

Is it Fabric.com that has all the ITY jerseys?

Thanks for the suggestions! I've got some "hi-tech matte hybrid" swatches on order from Emma One Sock, and some ITY from fabric.com. I'll give them a feel and see what I can figure out.
