Bernina 830 old cannot loosen inner wheel for bobbin winder

I have blisters from trying to turn it. I already took other one in for service and they said they had to use a "pet gorilla" to loosen it and then lubed it. I'm thinking that if just brute force, I could wrap some non-skid something on it and then take a wrench and try to turn it. What do you think? Could I break something? Should I just take it in?

Well, if you don't have a pet gorilla around the house, try a flat rubber gadget for opening jars. But even if you get it loose, it will need to be lubed. If you don't know how to do that, you will need to take it in for sure. You are lucky to have 2 vintage 830's. I have always wanted one!

You don't "have to loosen it" for any reason, if you really are getting blisters on your hands or about to be tempted to put too much torque on it and ding up your fly wheel, or crack something or bend your top shaft. The machine will still sew everything just the same way and be fully functional for sewing anything, even if that is stuck. It probably is too nice of a machine for something like that to happen to it. So I think, yes on the shelf paper grippy stuff and using your hands, and no on wrenches and implements of too much pressure and in the wrong ways.

Maybe you don't know it, and never noticed it before, but you don't really have to ever even release a fly wheel clutch to wind a bobbin at all. It still winds just as nice and good, even with the machine turning and the needle going up and down at the same time. I would have my needle unthreaded and take my bobbin case and bobbin out while doing that though.

Got it! I covered it with grippy mat and loosened it gently with a vice grip! Thanks!!
