I found this map measuring device at REI-- figured it would be useful for truing up patterns.

It's normally used for tracing a squiggly road on a map, and getting a distance in miles, nautical miles, or kilometers. And that's it.

However if you set the wheel to 1:63360 (one inch to a mile)-- it's a one to one scale--just ignore the MI indicator.

But I haven't had it long--is it truly handy to have in the sewing studio?

I have a similar tool. I have used it for walking seam lines but it is not super accurate on tight curves; it tends to slip around a bit. As long as you keep that in mind it can work, but I find I most often go to my flexible ruler.

I have a non-digital tool similar to this (mine is for architectural plans, not maps) and I have found it useful for truing patterns. I don't use it all the time, but there have been several instances where it was exactly what I needed.

NAYY, but you can buy this plastic wheel and put it on your Olfa cutter for much less cost and reasonably similar results.

Amy reviewed it here.

I first heard of this kind of wheel from Yoshimi. It seems to be useful!
