I have a Viking Designer1 and an old Singer 403 slant o matic. Neither is very good at free motion quilting. I have been trying to do some research on a machine that will do this for me but not break the bank. I saw the Janome h1000 recommended by Leah Day but then saw several mixed reviews. Can anyone recommend a good economical machine for me. Thanks for your help. Gragramaze

Very basic Janome. An older Bernina like a 1030 or 1031 mechanical or a mildly computerized 1090 would be great choices. That vertical bobbin is so smooth. You really just have to try some machines. I think some of the Brothers are better if you want new, but go to a dealer, not Walmart!

Older Pfaffs. With or without the IDT a Pfaff is a terrific FMQing machine. I have a 1222E and an 1199, one with and one without - no IDT needed on FMQ anyway. Recently I added an old Pfaff Hobby 307 - it really FMQ beautifully. Picked it up in a thrift store.

I also have a newer Janome - the 8050 from Hancock's Fabrics - and that baby loves to FMQ! Takes all the threads I can toss at it. I don't know how it would be on a huge quilt, but on smaller projects it really is problem free.

Brother PQ1500 or later series of machines. Also the JukiTL98Q or later series. Both are semi industrial straight stitch machines with 9" wide, 5" high arm areas. Excellent free motion quilting sit down machines.

I'm going to base my reply on the many free motion classes that I have help teach in the last 15 years. The most forgiving machines for FMQ noobies is the oscillating hook Berninas. However as the skill level improves this becomes less important. For those who like to race, the Juki, Pfaff Grand Quilter and like higher speed straight machines work real well. The Pfaff machines with the vertical hook have been quite successful in the classes as well. The drop in bobbin machines seemed to be the most difficult for beginners. All machines will FMQ. The best bet is to try a bunch and see which works the best for you. One thing to watch for, make sure there is no forward and back play in the needle bar as this is most likely to cause skipped stitches as you are pulling the fabric towards you. Good luck in your search!

I have done FM Sewing and thread painting on Janome 6600, 7700 and Bernina 635 with BSR and without all gave excellent results. I also did FM Sewing on a Pfaff Ambition very good. And a Pfaff QE4.0 which was terrible. You really need to sit down and try them.
I vote for a machine with a zig zag too. I like to do some thread painting with the zig zag stitch works great problem with the Juki 2010 it is straight stitch only so it will limit thread painting.
