I am having trouble locating a 12" ribbing for a neckband for a baby sleep sack. Does anyone know how I can make my own instead of trying to find one? Or does anyone know how to find one?
Thanks for all your help!

You can buy a length of cotton ribbing by the yard to make your own, it seems a bit extreme for one baby neckband though. I'm sure I have seen small bits of ribbing for sale designed as pre-made for this kind of use(I do buy by the yard), I think someone on sewitforsale has some listed in the last day or two.

Check Wawak, they do have ribbing but It may be just replacement cuffs for jackets.

If you have a tee shirt lying around with a matching ribbed you could use that or if you have a thrift store handy you could look for a shirt there.

What color are you looking for?

This is a hard product to find- I have tried quite hard over the years. Sometimes it pops up in some of the JoAnn stores but I have only seen it there in dark colors. Nancys Notions had it for a while, then discontinued and now its back but the cotton is mixed with either spandex or poly.

What I ended up doing was using white cotton interlock or self fabric and it always turned out OK. Just cut on grain (not bias), double the width and fold in half. Cut the length 1-2 inches less then what you need and stitch the ends together.
Stretch and test to see if will accomodate where you are attaching it- you may only need 1/2 to 1 inch less for an infant sleeper.

You can also make a facing or use a soft silky satin ribbon (used to do that in 70's) folded in half over the neckline.

If you have a serger you could use that for a ruffled edge finish, straight OL finish or turn the OL edge under and sew it down to look like a facing was put in.

Hope these ideas help- I'm doing a layette now and have given up finding a 100% cotton ribbing product.

I just re-read your post asking how to do it yourself.
Heres the link to Sarah V's infamous video:

I just got to thinking of the Martha Pullen store. It can be pricey but I took a class from her 2 years ago and she supplied the kits for the bonnet ribbons and sleepers for neonates that had a ribbed neck edge.
Sure enough- that infant specialty ribbing is on her site and on sale!

Hi SandimacD
Thank you for your input, and directions. I fear I may end up having to make my own. I have looked at Joann's and numerous online stores. All to no avail. I will check Nancy's notions before I give up.
Thank you again!
