We are now halfway into Week 3 of the government shutdown. I don't understand WHAT is wrong with Congress that they can't get it together! In the meantime, I haven't gotten paid (except for the first week, got 1 week of pay for the period up to Oct. 1st) and there is no end in sight. I feel lucky in that we have a little to tide us over but what about those with kids, mortgages and NO savings?

And it's not just me. The estimate is 400,000 people out of work in the DC metro area alone, and the trickle down has affected restaurants, stores, etc., not to mention the tourist trade. I can't even sew because fabric is an unnecessary expense at this point.

AAAAARGH.

Thank you for letting me vent...

Are you eligible for unemployment insurance?

I am sorry for your very immediate anguish, loss of income and loss of security.

Pinky.. you are not alone as you know. And this seems to be happening way too often anymore.. Politics

BUT. This is exactly why any and every family should have some emergency fjavascript:emoticon('')unds set aside.. In your case even two months would be enough.. You are luckier than most who are furloughed.. those who do not work for the government.. they never see back pay..

Every family should have emergency savings.. a back up plan. and so on.. those who work for the government.. and those who don't..

And most definitely. you should have a fabulous stash.. Might want to use some of that back pay for that.. No use wasting the time off work when you can be sewing..

Election is coming in the near future. Vote to get them OUT!!
That is what I'm going to do. There is no need for all this.
Other countries what are they thinking of us now.

I am a contractor who works on a federal campus - I am lucky that the nature of our contact has allowed us to "work offsite" so far. However, since I need particular government resources for 99% of my work, I have run out of things to work on and am now bleeding through my accumulated leave. On the other hand, we are getting paid.

I particularly feel bad for contractors who aren't allowed to work and have no chance of getting back paid, and for the many, many small businesses that are hurt by this. Our buildings are cleaned by workers from a nonprofit organization that helps disabled people find employment - I hope they were able to work on alternative projects. The little mom-n-pop restaurants next to campus are suffering badly because they have lost their entire lunch business.

Well is news is any indication hopefully this will be over quite soon. I think it's a travesty and should never be allowed to happen.

I have applied for unemployment but of course they are using every excuse available to avoid having to pay anything until we go back to work. There is a one-week waiting period, and since we got paid for Sept. 30 that week doesn't count, making the week of Oct. 7-11 the waiting week... so I doubt I will ever see the pittance that I might be eligible for. And then if/when we do go back and if we do get paid for the time we are furloughed, I would have to pay back any unemployment funds received.

Which also chaps my hide - not only did I file for unemployment for the first time EVER in my life, but the taxpayers (of which I am one!) will have to foot the bill for paying all of us to sit at home and DO NOTHING. We aren't even allowed to get a second job without prior approval and there is no one working who can approve it anyway!!

I am fully prepared to vote against ANYONE with an "Incumbent" after their name on the ballot!
