I was watching PBS last night & the lady was refurbishing allot of things to accessorize an attic bedroom. The project caught my eye is making a rug using fabric samples from a book. She took out several of the fabric samples set up her trusty Singer Heavy Duty sm & sewed them together to make a nice 4 x 6 rug for the floor. She added rug strips on the under side & put it down & it looked nice. I really liked it. So where do you get those books that are free too ? No mention of thread of use but thinking it would have to be cotton at least. .... anyone know where do you get those fabric sample books?
Thank you.

I would guess from interior designer's that are tossing old as new fabric lines come in. It sounds like you should use home dec fabrics, so check your local upholstory shops. I've seen them bundled and sold in the remmnant bins occasionally at my local JoAnn's. Check there and a Penny's etc...other stores that sell funiture.

Others may be more up to date than me, so I hope you get lots of answers. It sounds a fun project!

I've also found such a book (long outdated, upholstery fabrics) at a thrift shop, for $1. Probably too time-consuming to shop for, that way; but to keep in mind when exploring.

Thank you. I had not thought of thrift shops. It does not matter for this project if the fabric is outdated or not... Thanks!

I recently discovered that in the area where the remnants are located in our local fabric (home dec) shop there are also boxes in that same section with cording remnants and samples (either separate pieces or in books). They were having a huge sale and all were deeply discounted.
It was perfect for my needs as I really want to learn how to sew on all types of material so I was thrilled to find so much variety and the cording was a real bonus. Now I could practice and make mistakes and not have a heart attack thinking about all the fabric I was ruining in the process. As I checked out at the register my friend handed me the bag with all my "experiments", as she called them, and told me to enjoy!
Hope you succeed in your search!

Yes your curtain making place should have them. Any outfit that makes drapery and/or does home décor sewing should have them.

Make sure you stress you want the old outdated ones - ones they would otherwise throw away. The current ones cost designers money. One designer told me $100 - 200 per book. Aren't they pleased - NOT - when people just cut a piece out of the book because they are too cheap to buy a sample.

You might also want to check with furniture stores - like Lazy Boy (NAYY) as to what they do with their discontinued samples.

In my area there are a couple of "recycle" or "scrap exchange" stores. They accept donations from businesses and individuals to keep items out of the landfill. I've seen some of these fabric sample books there. Don't remember the cost, but they're cheap.
