I was in Auto zone (auto parts shop) last week and passed through the light bulb aisle. Certain styles of bulbs for the cars come in traditional yellow light AND broad spectrum bright light bulbs. They were about $10 compared to $3. I intend to go back and see if they have the size for my Singer 401A or FW. Or even for the tiniest, dimmest light bulb of the Necchi Supernova.
Has anyone else seen these bulbs? Do you think they are safe to use in vintage machines? Do they make such bright bulbs for vintage machines? I typically use lamps all around my machines when I sew. But I the real estate in the room and on the cabinet table is smallish. Would prefer to have the machine light do its job, and not get so hot!

I would think wattage of the bulb should be considered when using them for a vintage machine.

Take a look at the base of the bulbs also. Lots of auto bulbs are push in and twist types. Some machines have that, but most of mine are screw in types. You might try night light bulbs. I had lots because I collect those ceramic Christmas houses. When a machine bulb burned out late at night, one of those worked well.
I just checked and the machine bulb is 15 w and I think the nitelites are 4 or 6. I don't remember much of a difference in the amount of light. I do hate having to rethread the needle on one of my vintage machines as it's almost impossible to do without touching very hot metal. A cool bulb would be wonderful!

When the light bulb went on my vintage Elna recently I searched the net for an LED light which had the right fitting (mine is bayonet), right wattage, right voltage and right size to fit in the machine, and I came up with nothing unfortunately. There seems to be an almost limitless variety of LED lights out there, but unfortunately sewing machines seem to be beyond the limit!

I bought an LED light from 123sewinglights.com (the link TeeGee submitted) for my Bernina 1230, and I love it so much that I bought another one for my backup 1230. You take out the current lightbulb, and the LED fixture fits into the socket in its place. The LED lights are imbedded in a plastic plate that surrounds the bulb socket.

I would only buy the exact same bulb for your vintage machine. Years ago I tried to put in the wrong bulb in my 1970's Kenmore & totally blew out the wiring. Have never
tried to get it replaced but I learned my lesson.
