My dd likes to bake cakes and I'm looking for a yummy cookbook to send her for Christmas. I know she doesn't have any cake specific cookbooks since I checked her shelf last month when I was there visiting. I think she gets her recipes online.

It doesn't seem like there is much of a selection out there. I found these two at Amazon. Any opinions of suggestions?

Rose Levy Beranbaum's books are always wonderful and reliable. The cakes I have made from her cookbooks turn out well, and she has good info and instructions. She did write one called The Cake Bible, and it is full of good techniques. If she wants a book devoted to chocolate cakes, Michele Urvater wrote Chocolate Cakes, and I have loved that book. The recipes range from very easy to more complicated, but it sounds like your daughter is already a cake baker, so she shouldn't have any problems. Three other very reliable baking authors are: Dorie Greenspan, Maida Heatter, and Nick Malgieri. I have used their books so much, and there are many pages covered with baking ingredients in the books I own!
Good luck. I love cookbooks and baking, so I think that is a perfect gift!

A book devoted to chocolate cakes, what a good idea! DD's hubby loves chocolate. And I had forgotten that Dorie Greenspan wrote some baking books. I very much enjoy her writing and recipes in Around My French Table. Nick Malgieri is a new name to me, he has some interesting books.

Thanks, bakertoo!

No suggestions for a book. Just wanted to say that I downloaded a free Kindle book(let) with recipes sized for Easy-Bake ovens. Surely they will be just right for a snack for two.

I have Rose levy Beranbaum's Cake Bible, 1988. It is a phenomenal book. As well as cakes it has fillings frosting, fondants etc.

I find the recipes work best with a kitchen scale. The recipes are in cups, by weight ounces or metric. Baking is always most accurate by weight.

My copy is well thumbed.

It is the book I turn to for special occasion cakes. I use a variety of other baking books for snack or everyday cakes, like carrot cake or banana bread.

Any of Beranbaum's books would be wonderful. One of my very favorites, though, is Alice Medrich's Cocolat. If you can find a copy at a reasonable price (it appears to be all but out of print), it's well worth it. Lots of pretty (and delicious!) cakes with lots of very detailed directions.

The baking cookbook I use most often now is One Pot Cakes: 60 recipes for cakes from scratch using a pot, a spoon, and a pan. Authors are Schloss & Bookman. The majority of the cakes are pound-cake style, and I have found these the easiest to convert to gluten-free. There is even a section of flour less cakes... some of the best I've ever tried.

Lots of delicious baking book suggestions here! Thanks!!!

Beranbaum seems to be a favorite so I will probably go with one of those and add a second for chocolate and maybe even a third something depending on the prices I can find. I have some fun research to do. And drooling, I think. I seldom bake myself but some of what I am seeing might get me into the kitchen for a session.

Easy Bake I haven't heard that name in ages! Apps for the iPhone, videos online, time has flown. DD is 35 and Easy Bake looked a lot different back in her days, lol. But you are right, a good idea for small portion recipes.

I have looked at the One Bowl Cake book, I find that appealing. When I do bake I prefer something that can be made with the least amount of equipment. DD makes an exponential amount of dirty dishes when she bakes, maybe this would be something useful for her.

Thanks again for all the good ideas, now I have a nice selection to choose from.

I'd get her a Beranbaum book, and a digital scale for the kitchen. The EatSmart Precision Pro is Amazon's #1 seller, and only $25.
