I just got an e-mail from someone at simplicity. It said the following:
"Following a recent drop in our rankings we have been reviewing all of the links to our site and have decided to try to remove any that could possibly be marked by Google as unnatural. Whilst this isn't suggesting that your link to us isn't natural we just want to be as cautious as possible.
"Would you be able to help us by either removing or adding a no follow to any links you have to us?"
Has anyone else gotten this? I was just adding sources for the pattern illustration images I put on my blog. Should I just put the name and not the link?

I haven't gotten that email, but as a computer person I will say that makes no sense at all. It sounds like they want to make sure that the Google search algorithm sees them as the canonical site for Simplicity. Which they are, and if they aren't they need to address that directly with Google, not ask sewing bloggers to stop linking to them. Weird.

Same mail has come through to the administration area of another site. Someone in Simplicity is making a mistake. Their best free advertising will go belly up if links to their patterns are removed from the blogsphere and forums.

Laura, I'm glad you said that. I am definitely NOT a computer person, but that was my first thought when I read that email. You want people to stop linking to the site? Bizarre!
They have another problem: their site is s-o s-l-o-w on weekends that I usually give up and go to the McCall's site.

I will admit that I have only a very limited knowledge of search engine optimisation so I may have missed something in these following paragraphs. Please correct me if I'm barking up the wrong tree here.
I'm wondering if that the unnatural links referred to the email are links to pages that no longer exist, i.e. discontinued patterns, and that the links are generating 404 errors (page not found). And if so, that the resulting 404 errors are then driving down Simplicity's search rating.
If this is the case, I don't think it's reasonable of Simplicity to ask bloggers to clean up and remove links on their blogs, particularly links to older patterns no longer available, to ensure only live links are listed. And also if this is the case, why isn't Simplicity simply rerouting those page request to say their homepage?
