Butterick Webpage

I'm stuck on step 1. The instructions say "Reinforce right front along stitching lines, pivoting at small circles as shown. Slash along solid lines between stitching to small circles." There are so many different stitching lines and pattern cutting lines and 24w lines leading to 18w dots, it's so confusing! This is for the small right front that gathers at the waist. I actually think I cut the pattern out wrong, but am trying to figure out what was the intention and how to salvage it. Because they are gathers, it will just be slightly different. I can't figure out how to post a picture of the section I'm trying to describe.

Any chance you could post a photo of the actual pattern piece that's causing the problem.

Sometimes instructions can be very confusing so hang in there - once the pattern piece is up for view you should get an answer.

My gut feeling is that you need to slash your fabric to the small dot - see if that makes any sense

Does this work? I'm still learning how to operate in the forum.

It looks like the blue link works (maybe just for me).

Looks like you cut off some of the sizes. You should of traced
Only your size. But what they want you to do is sew a stay sitch
So the fabric does give a lot . Like the front where it a deep v
Crisscross . There shouldn't be no stretch there or you will
Have gaping . It should of given you a illustration on what should
Be done. Hope this helps.

In your photo, do you see the solid lines that each end at a small circle? Each solid line is bordered by stitching lines.
What they want you to do is stitch from the edge of your fabric to the small circle following the stitching line...when you get to the small circle, with your needle down, lift your presser foot and turn the fabric around so you are lined up on the other stitching line...stitch back to the large circle.
A tip: use a small stitch for this kind of reinforcement.
When the stitching is done then you cut along the solid line to the small circle.

It looks like you will be using the bottom small circle and corresponding lines according to your photo.
If I am mistaken, someone please correct me.

That is exactly what I have done. I must say, I'm not in love with the Butterick instructions. Since it is a gather, I'm not going to worry too much about it. I think I can fudge the discrepancy. I hate it when a pattern is difficult to understand once you cut it out. I tried to go to the Hancock to find the dress pattern to review an uncut piece to see where I erred, but it is no longer in the pattern book. Onward and upward. Thank you for the feedback.

Just to follow-up. Here is an image of the finished product.

The reinforced seam shows on one end if you zoom in closely enough. Because I used such a small stitch, it may stay there. I'd hate to snag the material trying to take it out. Besides, I don't expect many people will be looking at that part of the garment. Thank you again for helping me move forward with comments. We'll see how the finished dress looks and hopefully I'll post a review. BTW: I did bump down my experience back to beginner in my profile. After reading other beginner posts it felt like the right place for me.

Hi, I have just printed and am preparing to cut out the fabric. It seems that they have one set of the dots on the lower side of the band marked backwards. Size 24 is really 18 I believe. That would make the reinforcing stitching lines seem more accurate. I will post a review (my first) once I have completed the dress.
