I would very much like to participate in making gowns for the Wee Care program. The patterns for these precious little ones all include smocking. Is there a way to alter or substitute the smocking at the neckline?

They aren't all smocked. There are simple day gown patterns available also. These styles are often preferred for boys. Check out the SAGA website for more info. SAGA is Smocking Arts Guild of America and a wonderful organization. Also google Threads of Love. I am not sure of the patterns they offer but I know many make simple embroidered day gowns for this program. -- Edited on 10/27/13 6:20 PM --
Bunny on - thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. I will indeed follow up on your suggestions. The patterns that I found on SAGA were smocked, but your point is well taken that a non-smocked could be more to the liking of the parents of a precious boy.
