I've made this gown, it's a pale salmon pink, and I would like to use it as a coming home gown for our baby due in just over 7 weeks. I feel as though it needs something though, it's plain as it is, and I just can't figure out what to add to it. Be it embroidery (I do have a machine) or a bit of lace/ribbon etc?

3 strips of lace down the front with 3 little buttons is pretty standard for the Vintage look.
In the US it would most likely be used for a Baptism, with Baby coming home in a cutesy Onesie!

I wanted to use it because it was silk I got from my late grandma, and as there will be no Baptism, naming ceremony etc for our child, I thought it would be something special to have her in to come home in.

Im liking the idea of teh lace down the front.

I think grammab is on the right track. The lace and buttons would be just the finishing touch you're looking for.

so would this go all the way down, or just to around the same level as the wee tucks?

You could do a search on vintage baby clothes. I found a couple of places on Etsy that has baby clothes, you might get some ideas. I just check a few baby dresses that I have (Polly Flinders) and there is hand embroidery on the tucks and a very fine lace also.

Your gown is lovely. Best wishes to you and your family.

Congratulations!

I'd embroider tiny pink bullion rose buds and green leaves at the neckline but I'd rather embroider than almost anything else.

I've quit fighting my inner demons. We're on the same side now.

It's just fabric; we can out-think it.

Hand sewing is out at the moment. I hand sewed half the hem yesterday, and it was a nightmare, I've got bad carpal tunnel from this pregnancy so finding any handwork hard to do. Machine sewing is ok thankfully, but it's holding needles etc that causes so much pain.

Lovely in its simplicity.. if you do add lace.. don't add cheap lace.. Since you will be buying just a bit of lace.. get good lace.. and if you do add buttons.. I like those tiny round ones.. I guess its safe to use buttons on a baby's garment.. I don't want to get flamed for suggesting those and its been a long time since I was the mom of a little one..
If I were being completely honest. I do love the simplicity and if I were to add anything it would be just a teeny bit of something.. like the rosettes mentioned.. at the sleeve and at the neckline.. whatever you add, try to use the best quality you can find.. Maybe you have a bit of heirloom lace in your stash you could use..
