So, yesterday I finished a muslin for Simplicity 3750. I am pretty happy with it, but I had to take in the back a LOT. I'm thinking that it might be a good idea to go back and trace the top one size smaller and make a second muslin. Alternatively, I might be able to make the back (which is where the extra fabric is) one size smaller at the top and taper out a bit farther at the hips. There are a couple other minor changes I need to make, and because of the gathered front, I can't really predict what the fit will be like until I make it.

While I decide what to do, I'm taping together the pattern for a Sorbetto top. I figure if I get a couple of good top patterns fitted well in the muslin stage, I can buy fabric for them in one go.

When you fit a new pattern, how many muslins or versions of that pattern do you make before you arrive at something that you consider a good fit?

And what do you do with all those muslins (assuming that the changes are transferred to a paper pattern) once you are done with them? (I'm thinking I could save them up and stuff a cat bed!)

ETA: I know that everyone does this differently, so there's no "right" answer. I'm curious to see what other people do, though.

I don't think there is a number. One pattern may not need any tweaking and another so impossible that it goes into the recycle bin.

I have a handful of TNTs now, and for me, to get to a really good fit AND get all my sewing techniques for a specific pattern to a point where I'm confident at every step of the pattern (bearing in mind that I've not been sewing clothes long so some techniques are new to me) the answer is 2-3 iterations for anything that needs upper body fitting and 1-2 iterations for skirts. I don't make trousers yet at all so I can't say.

For tops, I need more iterations because most of my fitting issues are upper body. Iteration 1 is a muslin. Iteration 2 is my first wearable version. However, I have found there are often small fitting issues/wearability issues that I only discover when I have actually had a top on and lived a normal day in it, rather than just standing still taking photos for my blog! Iteration 3 is therefore the point where I make smaller adjustments and/or design changes to fix what doesn't work for me. I'm also most likely in Iteration 3 to abandon the pattern as written and use alternative techniques that I prefer. At that point, I think the pattern is a TNT for me.

One woman. One sewing machine. One giant stack of fabric. What could possibly go wrong?
