So the last trick-or-treater just came by. Now it's time to turn to my Halloween costume.

Found this RTW stretch velvet dress at the thrift store. The neckline is a too low for my tastes and it gapes. Plus, my bra straps show when I move because the neckline is too wide.

I bought 1/4 yard of stretch velvet in red, but I'm not sure of how to modify the neckline. Replace the mesh with the red velvet? Add a band of fabric to the contours of the neck opening?

All suggestions welcome.

If this is a one-off costume, here's what I'd try...

- Give it a nice, long dart starting at the center back neckline and going down. Pin first, see what works and doesn't pull the arms too far back, and let that fix most of the shoulder fit issue. A bit quick and dirty, but works.

- Use the mesh as a guideline for your stretch velvet (I think it'd look fantastic!), but narrow it by an inch at the top edge. That'll also help to pull in the shoulders and reduce the gaping there.

- Enjoy the costume! I really think those two things will give you a nice-fitting dress. Great find! Have a fabulous time!

Great suggestions -- thanks.

This dress has zipper down the CB seam so maybe I need to work around that...

D'oh, should have thought of that. Two darts, either side of the zipper, should work just as well though it might be just a little tougher to make the top neckline pretty ... but I'm less picky about that stuff for a costume.

You should have same fabric flower attached neck line or same colour lace attached the neck line.
