Can anyone measure RTW?

I just made McCalls 6224 in size 3T, and well, they look big. But I have no way to judge.

Does anyone have ready to wear size 3T pants they'd be willing to measure the inseam and the crotch to waist length?

These are for my nephews - and I'd like them to be a surprise, so I can't really go calling my sister for measurements. I only see the kids once a year or so, so I'm not sure if my estimate of 'too big' is accurate or not. I just know that I made my husband a pair of pajama pants once and the crotch to waist was enormous, so when these looked too big, I got worried.

I suppose the next step if no one has something on hand is to head into town and go to Walmart to do some snooping. How do I pull that off on child's garments though? Can I just pull out the tape measure?

(Never mind- after a lot of googling, I've found 14" inseam, 21" outseam at 2 different sites, so that has to be a bit standard.)

Thanks! What a nice thing to say :)

I haven't done much garment sewing lately, so I don't stop by PR as much. I'm pretty obsessive about quilting now. I even had a quilt hang in a national show this year :)

But it's Christmas time- and my sister has requested pajama pants for her boys to wear while opening presents, and I love sewing for my nephews, so I'll oblige. I'm embroidering shirts to match.

You probably don't need this now, but—I seem to remember from using Kwik Sew's Sewing for Toddlers master pattern booklet that the T designation for Toddlers indicates the child is still in diapers. Therefore, the patterns have an extra allowance for the diaper in the crotch area.

When I sewed from this book for my granddaughters, I eliminated the extra fabric (from the top as I recall) when the size was right but she was no longer in diapers.

Hope this helps.

Interesting. These kids have been out of diapers for over a year.

I ended up taking 3" off the hem and 1" off the crotch to waist length.

No idea how the "bulk" will fit, but these are lounge pants for gift opening Christmas Day.

I've gone into a store and used a tape measure to measure a pair of RTW infant's pants before. I was sewing a pair, and I wasn't sure what size to use.

I recommend the Kwik Sew Toddler and Childrens books for you. They are basic patterns and the patterns are included in the books.
I have all the KwikSew books. Very useful. I use them for my grandchildren and myself.

Thanks for the recommendation. I already have the pants sewn though. Now I need to decide if they have to be altered.

Do you still need the measurements? Mine is 2T, but just got a pair for her b-day a size larger.
