Hello everyone, I'm looking forward in using Pattern Review and this blog for men. I'm relatively new to sewing. And look forward in chatting with all about your experiences. We do need to encourage men in the art and practicality of sewing. Paul

Welcome! What sort of stuff do you like to make? I do cellphone and flashlight type holsters, wallets, backpacks, purses for the ladies I like, and miscellaneous stuff like a new roof for my son's gazebo. I've got 4 cast iron vintage machines, one modern junk plastic fantastic, and wishing for a real live industrial walking foot.
Oh, and I work in a parachute shop. :)

A sewing machine is just a welder for textiles.

Now that's some utility sewing! I think one of the most rewarding areas is when DH comes up with a hunting, fishing or tool need and I have a vision of how to sew the function design he maps out. Sometimes what he buys needs revision or reinforcement. I love the creativeness you guys are bringing. Welcome.

Sandi - have you seen Al's gazebo roof? It is amazing!
Here it is

I keep forgetting about those jobs I have done. I made a slip cover for our hot tub once because the birds kept pecking through the vinyl cover. It was like a giant fitted sheet made of rip stop nylon. We changed to a different colour of vinyl last time we replaced it and they leave it alone no, thank goodness!

I also made a seat back cushion and storage pocket for our double kayak, modeled after one we bought off the shelf. I wasn't too impressed with my work, but when we went out for a paddle this summer, I couldn't tell which was which. That kind of sewing can be very satisfying, especially having to figure out how to design and put the pieces together.

Happy sewing!

Hi Al., Well i'm impressed. A man who can build a roof and sew too. Right now as i'm building on my skills. I am doing clothing repair/mending and home decor projects. I enjoy the practicality of mending as both being useful and an art itself. I'm also starting to make Place-mats, table runners etc. Actual useful stuff. My machine is a Singer 401A. I have a few in both the first and second version. Most in a cabinet. And i'm looking for a really nice Singer seven drawer treadle at some point. Not sure of the model yet. As long as it will take a modern needle. Paul S

Holey Moley, Al! That's some cover! But then I'm sure with you it comes naturally, as you work in a parachute factory--lifelong large-scale skills that many of us can't get. Congrats on such a great job!

Al,I am beyond impressed! Wonderful accomplishment.
Of course men should sew if they want to. The world needs all sorts of stuff sewn up. Best way to get something you need sewn is to sew it yourself whether you are male or female.
