With the holidays and gift giving on the horizon, I would like to ask: When you are making pajama bottoms for someone who lives out of the area(example: married children, or grandchild on the other side of the country), how do you go about getting the elastic right without them trying them on for a final fit?

I'm in the midst of making pajamas for myself that are done w/ elastic + ties. Would that be an option for you? Two buttonholes at the front like for drawstring pants, but the ends of the ties are sewn to the waistband elastic that ends up hidden in the casing. Once you tie them once, you can get them on and off w/o undoing them as long as there is enough elastic at the back. They're also adjustable as the elastic loosens up.

I've wondered this too as I want to make PJs for my dad for Christmas...hopefully my mom knows his approximate waist size! :)

If you know what size he wears, go into a store with your tape measure, and measure the waist on a RTW pair. There......problem solved, or use the elastic with ties as another poster suggested.

There is also buttonhole elastic, thus, it is adjustable. I've never had an opportunity to use it, but I remember Nancy Zeiman's showing it on her TV program.

I was also going to suggest buttonhole elastic. I have used this for toddler clothes, especially since they are often handed down. Pam Erny's site has it Fashion Sewing Supply

@emm0119...I like that idea a lot!

@ Mrs.C...I once "guessed" my DN's size by asking his college roomie to poke around in his undie drawer, but the surprise went south when he got caught!

@Gl butterfly...wish I thought to use this for above mentioned nephew!

@rhgadavis...if you go with buttonhole elastic, I would definitely use good quality from Pam. I have some that is not as wide and (half inch) and it doesn't wear very well.

OK, I'm going to say it again. A long time ago when I made pj bottoms, and couldn't measure their waists because I wanted them to be a surprise, I measured the elastic waist on their RTW pj bottoms. It worked. If you're not so lucky to measure the way I did, then you will have to go into a store and measure the waist of a small, medium, large, extra large, etc., or whatever size he usually wears. It should work.

I use drawcord elastic, elastic with the string built in. I don't even make button holes, I just leave a small opening in the center front seam. Sometime I'll have the strings inside, sometimes outside.
For a young child I use buttonhole elastic. I use it for everything with an elastic waist, that I make for my grandkids.

That's HILARIOUS Donna! CCris, that's a great idea! I am sure that if he bought pj pants he'd buy a large. Thank you!!
