I just started sewing in August. I made some things for the house, some underclothes, and last week I finally made my first garment-a pajama. I was so excited to finish and wear it!

I drafted the pattern myself. Before this I actually spent weeks (of available sewing time) learning how to draft a block. I mainly used Patternmaking by Dennic Chunman to draft the block. It fitted quite well, but then I spent weeks making the minor adjustments needed to fit perfectly, because I didn't know what I was doing. I perserved until I was happy with it, but was well and truly sick of the whole thing by then.

So I changed tack. Actually, I realized during this process that I was making a block for wovens, when I really want to use knits for my first projects. So after my painstaking work, I decided to wing it and quickly adjust the block for knits by closing the darts and tracing around the new shape. It worked! I made a couple of muslins, a sports bra, and the pajama!

I'm now back into pedant mode, trying to refine the knit block to fit perfectly, but I'm so glad I let off steam by actually sewing some stuff. I'm really excited about drafting and sewing.

I have to thank everyone on Pattern Review. I've been checking in here a lot. I've learned a lot from your great tips. It's also inspiring to see everyone's creations.

Cheers,
Angela

Hmmm, I can't get the image to behave. There are some pics on my blog: http://sewmore.blogspot.com/

Wow, I looked at your blog and am very impressed with what you have made only since August. That's great! You seem to already have a good idea about the difference in knit and woven blocks or slopers. You are experimenting and that's the best way to learn, by our successes and failures. Just don't do what I did and forget which slopers are for which, and cut out a woven pair of shorts from a knit sloper....OMG it doesn't work if you ever want to sit down - LOL.

How exciting! Cloning and self drafting are 2 things that excite me too.

Thanks for your replies and compliments, it's fun to share my excitement!

Yes, I just pull it over my head. It's a stretchy rayon knit, so goes over easily.
