I'm very happy with my Evolution, but I see a lot of posts about the Brother 1034D here. If you are in the market for one, they are on sale at Wawak for $216.34, which seems like a pretty good price. I think today only.

Hi, This is $179 on Amazon and it really is a great machine. I got mine from Amazon and haven't had any troubles at all.

I bought mine from Amazon, my daughter lugged it down, I used it three times and almost dumped it in the pool. It is as far as I am concerned the worst machine made.
I gave mine to my maid and bought a Babylock Imagine, the best decision that I ever made. Those of you that love this machine must be saints.

Wait till you need service on the 1034! Use once, throw away. Been seeing a bunch of these in for "repair"--the tech has to try and tell the owner DNR (Do Not Repair) Ughhhh

They may be great for light serging but I wonder if those coming in for repair a lot are trying to take on more serious serging. I'm of the mindset now I'd rather buy something good quality used and up/recycle "stuff" than buy cheap new stuff that doesn't last or costs almost as much to repair. A great old juki or Bernina 234 or 334 (can't recall # off top of my head) could last a lot longer.

Another vote for "I love my 1034D"!

I think it's a really good beginner serger. It's quite straightforward to use and does a decent job.

I have a friend who's a custom dressmaker in England, and she's the one who turned me on to the 1034D. She had picked one up as an extra serger for the workroom, and was so impressed by its sturdiness and reliability that she started recommending them. Obviously any model can throw out the occasional lemon, and everybody's needs and preferences are different... but there are 871 reviews for this machine on Amazon, going back years and years, and almost 800 of those are 4 and 5 star. The fact that they sell so many of them--and STILL sell the same model years and years later--says a lot about the quality of the machine, IMO. :)

Brother has always had sturdy, reliable models at entry-level price points. They make very nice, no-frills machines that last.

I agree. Even with having purchased my new-to-me Evolve (which I've been using heavily), I've been leaving my 1034D out so that I can go back-and-forth easily. I'd have thought that I'd put it away in a closet, but I'm really liking having a second/backup serger around.
