I'm making Onde from the Sewing Workshop in navy wool flannel. When I bought the pattern, I was advised not to skip the topstitching as it really enhances the garment. I'm inclined to agree, but my question is whether to use a contrasting color or not. No color has jumped out as a good contrast, and I don't want it to look too crafty. What's your opinion? If you made this jacket in a solid color, would you use matching or contrasting topstitching? If contrast, what color thread to go with navy? Thanks for helping me think through this project! Pat

I think navy (matched or slightly darker) is the best neutral choice, but you could also choose thread that matches your buttons.

For example if you were planning to use red or bright yellow buttons - red or bright yellow topstitching might be a bold, but attractive choice.

What color buttons will you use?

If you don't want it to look crafty, I would do the topstitching in matching navy. If you really want a contrast, try a taupe maybe.

Navy with white topstitching would be lovely. If you have any doubts as to your topstitching skill, though, I'd go with navy. I think squirrel-y lines will make it look more homemade than anything.
