I'd like to make my DS's teacher and tutor a nice bag or something for Xmas. His teacher is very hip and cool and his tutor likes more traditional things.

I downloaded the free Craftsy class on tote bags and was going to use that but thought I would ask if anyone had any other ideas.

TIA

After years of making shopper totes I recently did a grownup version of a drawstring backpack with a lot of extra pockets and zippers that I absolutely love. It was a very fast and easy project that can be dressed up/down with fabric choice. (skipping the zippers would make it even faster.)

I've had a recent fascination with the Bow Tucks tote pattern and the Mini Bow Tucks purse pattern. To me they look great and are fun to make. I find myself digging through my stash to find interesting combinations of fabrics to make them with.

I am going to make two friends Three big bags from one Jelly Roll. I think these big bags will make great beach bags for my girlfriends and their kids.

I may make one for Mum too, but will add a couple extra pockets to hers. Mum goes to the beach daily all summer and needs a place for her blanket, towel, book, keys sunglasses etc.

For a teacher these bags would be great, they are big enough to hold lots of stuff, the handles are secured in the bottom for extra strength, the outside pocket could hold keys.

I saw a bag "pattern" (that I cannot find right now - aaarrgh) that was an interesting arrangement of squares. There was no obvious "side piece" or "bottom piece" - just squares sort of on the bias.

Oh, here, I finally found the pattern! LOL

It's called the Sew Easy Schlep Bag

I love this scallops tote pattern from see kate sew: http://seekatesew.com/the-sweet-scallops-tote-pattern/

It uses up scraps like no other and is quick and easy to make. Also it is a free pattern.

I once made my son's 5th grade teacher a modern patchwork handbag from an issue of Stitch magazine. She really liked it. I don't usually make such elaborate gifts for teachers, having 3 kids, but she was a special teacher. I have made plain no-pattern-necessary lined bags with straps for teachers. I try to find a fabric that relates to something they like, or colors they like to wear. Having worked in education myself, I know teachers are always toting things to and from school. I have also made Amy Butler's Birdie Sling and some other Amy Buler bags for friends and they have been a hit.
