I purchased a Bernina 230 earlier in the year (used)and all I did until a few weeks ago was test it and do a few small repairs. The last few weeks I have been working on piecing two quilts, everything has been great until tonight. The sound of the machine changed. My first thought was time for a lint clean out and good oiling. Then I discovered a problem, unlike all my other machines I can’t figure out how to get into this machine to do those things. I cleaned out a bit of lint(nothing that would make a machine go wonky) via the bobbin door but that is the best I can do. The needle plate doesn’t have a screw, I removed the screws on the back of the bed and the side upright but I cannot get the compartments open. I have been using cotton thread so there is a good chance there is lint up top.
The machine makes the same sound without fabric in it so I know it is not a dull needle issues.
I hope my poor little machine doesn’t need to go to the dr, I will take it if I need to but I would like to clean it out to see if that is a problem first.

Thanks for any help.

Push down on the target on the upper right of the plate to remove. Also, remove the hook and clean the race and put one drop of oil on the race. That should quiet it down. The book will show you how.

There are also utube videos that show you how to release the door to take out the assembly that holds the bobbin and hook in place. Google for any CB hook Bernina.

Thank you, that pop out plate is great. It is not in my book, must have missed that page when they put mine together.

I had already oiled the chase and taken it apart but getting the plate off let me clear out some more lint.

The Bernina pop off plate is fantastic, once you know about it! I clean it multiple times in a large sewing session vs it waiting months for me to be bothered mucking around with the screwdriver!

Since you bought it used, do you know when it was last serviced by a Bernina technician? Lint can get down into the innards (technical term-LOL) that they can clean out, and properly lubricate those mysterious inner workings.
