I am sure this has been asked before, but I can't figure out the search function on the boards. Please point me!

I am looking for a recommendation for a sewing machine suitable for a young child. I know of Singer Model 20. But are there any contemporary models that are worth a look?
Thanks

How old is the child. If 6 or older why not buy a basic $99 babylock or Brother at your local sewing machine store. Some will even give free lessons with it.

I agree - I wouldn't recommend a toy machine - they work sometimes at best. I do collect them but they are not always easy to run.

Here is one of threads discussing sewing machines for kids.

This Hello Kitty machine on Amazon is really cute and got good reviews.

I second the Hello Kitty (green) model. It's a great starter machine.

Kids these days are so tech savvy that if you give them an electronic model they will catch on quickly.

Speed control can be a plus and there are several budget-priced models that have it.

The Janome mini may be a good choice. My dd has a kenmore that is similar, but no longer made. She found the small size less intimidating than my full size machines.

My ten-year old DGD prefers the electronic machines with speed control over the featherweight. The featherweight was a great
starter machine but she likes to try out the decorative stitches now.

Please post the age and maturity level of the particular child.

You asked about a toy sewing machine in your topic header...but do you want one that is real?

Another suggestion to consider is a vintage machine with a hand crank conversion. This gives the child complete and absolute control over the sewing speed.

This allows kids to actually sew stuff together and learn some basic sewing skills before they move up to a motorized machine.

4H Go Green Activity - lots of info about converting to hand crank (PDF)

Hand Crank and Flywheel (and finger guard) @ Sew Classic NAYY, I've purchased the flywheel and crank to do a conversion from SewClassic, but these parts are available from a number of online vendors.
