Just got an e-mail from our Pfaff dealer that starting in January 2014 they will be renting out the Pfaff Power Quilters by the hour. I never heard of renting a sm out before. Is this new? Any thoughts? I feel puzzled...

Our Brother dealer rents out a long arm quilter. You come use it in the store to do the quilting. They will rent most any of their machines by the hour.

Sure. There are quilt shops that you can rent the use of a long arm in the shop...not take it home(imagine that?)

I'm sure this is along the same concept. Rent some time on one, do a project or two and they probably hope that you will want to buy one. You would think they are planning on spending quite a bit of time giving training?

Sounds like a plus- plus situation. You get to use one without the expense of buying and they get a little return for their output and maybe a few interested buyers.

This is a growing trend for machine dealers. A local HQ dealer has a whole fleet of long arm machines to lease by the hour or day. There are also lessons one can take and a beginners class is mandatory, if you've never used a long arm before. What is great about this particular dealer is that she is an award winning quilter so she is truely an expert.

one of the local quilt shops near me rents their BL crown jewel by the hour. i use it to baste my quilts (not enough floor space in my condo), then i bring them home to actually quilt. :)

ETA - the shop where i go doesn't sell machines, so it is extra nice to use it without any sales pressure!

it doesn't matter what type of sewing you do. you are sewing, and sewing is good.

How about this chain that lets you buy a membership (like a gym) to their tool shop?
You must take a safety course and demonstrate your knowledge of the equipment.
One of their tools is... a sewing machine. Yup. They rent sewing machines and sergers.

Very interesting responses. Thank you....
The price in the e-mail was $15 per hour & must be able to use sm independantly.

That sounds pretty reasonable to me. I pay $20/hr for the crown jewel, but I had to take a $75 class on it first.

Years ago, all sewing machine shops used to rent machines by the week or month to take home. I rented one for several months (a nice Singer, in a carrying case) when I was newly married and pregnant with my first child. Made all my maternity clothes on it! I had not heard of the in-store rentals but it sounds like a good idea.
