What kind of feet does a Necchi BF take? Just bought one and I thought she could take my Singer low-shank feet but they seem just a tad too short...Is she a high-shank machine? I tried searching but can't find anything to confirm. My machine didn't come with the straight-stitch foot which is what I need right now. Thanks in advance!

ETA:, ok, my membership to the Yahoo group went through and a search of their site indicates that the BF is low shank since it's a ss, and the BU is high shank since it's a zz. Is this true? If so, why did the ss foot from my 221 not work with the BF? It didn't touch the feed dogs on the BF when I tried it out.

Edited YET again: So...the low-shank feet (ones I bought from singerpartsonline or something similar, for my 237) fit and work great. The darning foot and walking foot fit fine. Just very weird that the ss from my 221 and the zz foot from my 237 are too short. Any thoughts/info?

With the presser foot down, the center of the screw hole to the needle plate measures about 1-1/4" on a high shank machine. I have a few old Necchis that are all high shank and I wouldn't be surprised at all if yours was, too. I might have a spare straight stitch foot kicking around.

Thanks for the reply. By that measurement she's definitely low shank, and I did find some of my low shank feet (generic) fit her well. I'm just baffled as to why the ss foot from my 221 and the zz foot from my 237 don't reach the feed dogs. The fabric doesn't feed at all when I use them, they just hover over it.

I think at one point there may have been slight height variations on short shank machines. I seem to remember a dealer telling me that my Elna Air Electronic had a shank that came slightly closer to the feed dogs than current Janome's and that the darning foot I was looking at would not work. Not sure if this is real but it might explain the phenomenon.

Interesting. My machine only came with what looks like a shirring foot but I wasn't too bothered since I was sure it was low shank and that I could use the ss foot from the 221. I found an authentic BF one on eBay last night but it would have been nice to not have to buy it. At least my walking foot and darning/embroidery foot fit well. Would have been upset to have to buy those again as well.

I wonder if there's a way to tell which low shanks will work since I have to buy everything online?

Ok, I think I figured out the issue once my brain engaged fully. It dawned on me that the shirring foot that came with my machine (its only foot) was not shirring, and that perhaps someone along the way raised the presser bar slightly so that the shirring foot would no longer gather and instead allow the machine to sew normally. So, I put the Featherweight ss foot on and lowered the presser bar carefully (loosened the screw holding it in place) so that the ss foot made contact with the feed dogs when they are in the highest point. Viola, she sews with the ss foot, and guess what, the shirring foot "shirs".

A Necchi BF is a short shank as you've discovered and a Necchi BU is a long shank.

Yeah, I definitely have that confirmed

My issue as it seems, is that someone raised the presser bar slightly so that the shirring foot would function as a regular stitching foot and not gather the fabric. This then made the bar a tad too high for regular feet. Bar slightly lowered, problem solved.
