While out shopping last week, I spotted some darling on-trend quilted vests at a few shops, and knew my mom (71) would love them. She's a true petite, though, so I had to hunt something down online, and managed to find one at a department store local to her (so she can return it if there's a problem with the fit). Win!
The color selection in her size was limited, but fortunately we both like brown. :)

Cute as it is, it looks a little lonely by itself. The vest was a bargain, so there's a little more in my budget to buy something to go with it. It looks like a lot of places are styling them with matching sweaters, but there wasn't one in the same brand/color... and also petite.

Any other suggestions?
Thanks!!

(And before any other moms chide me for procrastination--I'm not! Much, anyway. We won't see my folks until New Year's. )

This mom applauds your thriftiness! Don't you knit? It screams for a skinny scarf/muffler that can be worn alone with the vest or tucked under a coat without strangling her. And a couple of pair of skinny stretchy gloves in vivid colors to go with the scarf.

Does your mom travel a lot? You could stitch a security pocket to the inside of the vest and include protective anti-scan sleeves for a passport and credit cards.

Stitch up a coordinated hat???

Add a silk or base layer camisole - she'll stay cozy by adding in one of her one sweaters or tops.

And for next year, one of your embroidered period purse things. Beautiful for her to carry non valuable essentials once her cash and cards are secured in the hidden vest pocket.

Best wishes and happy holidays.

How about a nice cream color turtle neck or t shirt?

I love the hat idea. I was also thinking off-white t-shirt or turtleneck as already mentioned.
You could add accessories like some chunky brown wood bracelets, or see if you can score some cozy hand-knitted socks somewhere (christmas stands? etsy?)

Easy to whip up a coordinating circle scarf or headband/earwarmer too.

What is an anti scan sleeve, and how do you make one? Sounds like something very useful. Much more so than something that hangs on your neck or waist. (which is truly a PIA when traveling in winter.

By the way, I love that you bought your mom a vest. I am new to vest wearing, but now find it a truly useful garment. Keeps you warm on short trips to the store, and around your house, yet leaves the arms free. I wear a couple with simple winter dresses also. I would say a nice top, turtle neck especially. Or make an infinity scarf for her out of a light weight fabric.

Thanks, everyone! The one thing I am positive Mom has lots of... is cream turtlenecks. LOL I'm off to the shops this afternoon, though, and will see if I can find a friend for it.

Vivian, my mother is a very trendy dresser, and this is just so *her.* (Last year I got her a scrunchy grey herringbone scarf that was ruched with elastic thread. Big hit! This year I'm taking her to Charming Charlie and letting her go wild. :b)
