Hi everyone! I'm new and this is my first post. I'm thinking about buying a used Jenome 9500. It was bought new in '08 and I would be the 3rd owner.

I'm going to have a chance to sew/embroider on it before purchasing and am hoping you might have some tips for me on what to look for both good/bad. It would also help me if someone can suggest a price range that this machine should sell for. Current owner is asking $695.00

Well, I have the next model which is the 9700. Questions I would address are what is the service record for this machine. Do you understand how to use the PCMCIA flash card that you will use the transfer embroidery designs to the machine. Take a look at the embroidery screen. The newer machines are in color. I don't know if I would pay almost $800 for this machine. You will likely want an editing embroidery design software. Also, does your computer or laptop have the slot for the flashcard? If not, you will heed a flash card reader for this. They are still available, by the way. Who will train you on how to use this machine? Can you stretch your budget or save for a more up to date machine? My 2 cents.

I forgot to ask. Why are you going to be the third owner on a machine that is only 5 years old??? Are you buying from a machine dealer and has this machine been used as a trade-in??

Thanks for your help, Sandy. I've decided to get back into sewing now that I'm retired and have time on my hands. I found this Janome 9500 listed on Craig's List and thought it might be a good buy. I didn't even recognize the name but after visiting a local retailer I learned that they are well thought of by most folks....kinda like Singer was back in the day.

Original owner was a lady in her 70s who was given it by her children. Evidently she did not use it very much. Present owner bought it to add to her 'collection' of 7 or 8 machines. That was 6 or 8 months ago and she has now decided to downsize her machines and purchase a high end machine to replace some of them.

There are no maintenance records, which concerns me a bit. It does come with some xtras: Embroidery Magic 2, a card reader and some colored spools of thread. $650.00.
