I'm looking for a new machine. I thought I was going to buy the Singer Quantam Stylist 9960, but I like to quilt and thought the space right of the needle might be too small for bigger quilts. I found the Juki HZL G110 at Amazon, and kinda liked it. It's a bit more costly but looks nice and has a larger harp space. But I can't find a single review of the machine, so am hesitant to decide on it. Does anyone have this machine who could give me info about it?

They both look like good machines, however just from the Amazon photo, I like the image quality of the Juki LED screen better. I find the Singer hard to read.

Do you have a juki dealer to test drive one. I know the singer quantums are very popular and get decent ratings, but juki usually makes a good machine. I think juki dealers are just harder to find than singers, but they have a good reputation for being awesome machines

No Juki dealers anywhere near me :(
I read some reviews of a similar model, the Juki Excite G210 (on HSN website, I think), and there were a fair number of complaints about tension issues. I'm wondering if this G110 has similar tendencies. It is pretty, though!

What about the tension problem issue...it seems to be prevalent but there are many who love their Juki sms too...so what's up?

I have the G210. I bought it last January and it has been put through its paces making around 50 costumes for my drama group out of all sorts of fabric.

I love it - I've had no problems with the tension at all. It's the first machine I've had where I can actually use the overcasting stitch on the edge of fabric without rucking up the fabric. When I went for a test run, I even sewed a perfect buttonhole on chiffon (I know you don't want to do that in real life, but still!).

The only two negatives I can find are the width of the arm when you remove the wider table - it's a bit wider than my other machines. It's no problem for fitting an adult-sized sleeve around, but I had to make some children's costumes and it was too big for the smallest ones. Not a major problem for me - I rarely sew for children.

The other problem is that to get into the bobbin area to clean it, you have to unscrew the metal plate underneath the foot. Apart from being used to a Bernina where I just pressed a knob and the whole thing just lifted off, the placement of one of the screws makes this awkward - I have to use the 'screwdriver' tool in my left hand (I am right-handed) and it keeps hitting the needle threader, unless I stand up and come round the other side of the machine.

Neither of these problems are insurmountable and I'm happy to live with them.

In fact, after trying my machine out, a friend of mine went out and bought one for herself!

For access to a screw with a low clearance I use an off-set screw driver. Once you get use to how to swing it from side to side...it's very easy to use...and even a little fun. Maybe a set is available at your favorite hardware store as well.
Here is a link to see what it looks like: 3 piece off-set screwdrivers

Long before there were free arms on sewing machines...we sewed in the round. I am looking for a good link about that...when I find one I will edit this post to include it.

Edited to Add: Although this shows hemming adult jeans it's the best picture found so far. It also shows sewing on the right side...but if the item is right side out...then sewing can be done on the "wrong" side so that you can see the folded edge better.
Link: Hemming on a flat bed sewing machine from sew-classic.com (no free arm)

This is sometimes called "sewing in the round".
