I found a pristine, in box, vintage singer buttonholer for vertical shank machines (V102878) at a local thrift shop for 5 bucks. I figured if I couldn't make it work, I would EBay it. But, to my shock, it actually fits on my Bernina 1130 with the shank adapter. I'm geeking out! It came with the complete set of die inserts for bound, worked and keyhole buttonholes, including an eyelet, plus the original instruction booklet, etc. I figured it wouldn't fit given the foot clamp lever, but it squeaks in just barely. The bottom plate doesn't sit properly, but just dropping the feed dogs did the trick, no plate needed. I was suuuuuuuuper careful, walking the first round of stitches through by hand, but no problems.

Eeeeeeeek, awesome, easy, perfect every time buttonholes!!!!!

Ok, I nabbed some pics. I'm posting this because 1) I'm really excited, and 2) I couldn't find any info on the possibility of the buttonholer fitting my machine when I searched on my phone at the store. Hopefully somebody else finds this useful someday.

The box and its contents.

See how the foot clamp lever just clears the case of the buttonholer? Anybody who has tried to put generic accessories (like a walking foot) on a Bernina knows how amazing this is.

The presser foot lift lever just BARELY rests on the top of the case, but it doesn't put any real force on the lever. Works for me.

Do you have a picture of a buttonhole sewn out? Looks like a great solution.

Here you go! This buttonholer tends toward a long (zigzag) stitch even at the shortest setting, so it takes two passes to get it looking like this. If you really wanted the perfect satin stitch look, you'd probably want to play around with thread/needle choice more than I did here, and maybe take it around for a third pass. That said, these are 4 servicable buttonholes, done one after the other, on just a folded piece of woven scrap without any stabilizer - and I got them without any glitches. They'd look nicer if I properly stabilized the fabric and adjusted the stitch width and cutting space some. But, for a first stab at it and only $5, I'm a VERY happy camper!

Wow, that's quite a contraption but it makes beautiful buttonholes, and keyhole style as well! This would probably work on my Bernina 1008 since it takes "old style" feet. Great find!

I should add that on my first try the zigzag was REALLY long, and my first buttonhole I used 3 passes to get it looking right. When I opened up the case to oil it per the instructions, I noticed that the lever that drives the feed dog has an adjustment screw in it. I adjusted the screw to make the lever arm as long as possible and that shortened up the zigzag enough that the satin looks decent on two passes (particularly if the thread matches the fabric).

Assuming the clearance on the 1008 is similiar, I bet it would! The key points are 1) you need the shank adapter. I'm honestly not sure if the one I have is the 75 or the 77. Anybody have one they know the identity of that they can measure for me? 2) Able to drop the feed dogs or have a cover plate for them.

Wow! I just looked through my vintage singer and cabinet that I picked up last summer and viola, in the accessories is this same attachment. Now If only I could have someone teach me how to use all of this stuff (and the machine). Not a bad problem to have. I've been sewing faithfully on my old Bernina 730 record. I am tempted to jump in and sew something on this machine this weekend.

Thank you for all of the pictures. Now I have an idea of how to put the thing together. My box does not have instructions.

Jeanie who likes that older machines speak to her. They often say, take me home.

Oh my! I have that old Singer Buttonhole maker... left over from my mother's collection. I bet it will work on my old Bernina 1090 that I got for $700 on Ebay. Now... if only I can locate that Singer buttonhole maker.

I love the buttonholer too, and use it on my Janome mechanical, but it will not (of course!!!!) work on my Janome Professional.
