Hello! this is my first time posting here
My wonderful Husband has told me to look for a new sewing machine. I am currently using a Brother cs-6000i, which is a newbie machine. I have quilted an entire queen sized quilt on it, but it wasn't pretty!
I would say I am a beginner quilter as I have never Free Motion Quilted. My little Brother machine just won't allow it (it has tension issues).
I found a Bernina 153QE Machine on Craiglist. It looks like it was immaculately kept. The owner recently passed and her husband is trying to sell it, and he knows nothing about sewing or quilting. From the looks of her sewing room, she was quite into quilting as many of her other accessories are also for sale.
It is listed at $760, but he would take $600, maybe less. My needs are: basic garment construction (for personal use- children), quilting and learning to free motion quilt. I need something that will last me a good while as my husband is in medical school and, well, we have a ways to go before we are actually profitable there

Thank you for any input at all!!
Holly

I own a Bernina 153QE and have used it for general sewing and quilting. It is able to handle lap sized quilts with free motion quilting. I am purchasing a new Juki TL 2010Q for faster straight stitching and free motion quilting. The 153 sounds like a great deal to me especially if it has been cared for. Make sure it comes with the feet in a little plastic carrying case and the instruction manual too. If this gentleman will let you buy some more items in good condition, you might save a lot of money. Rulers and such are costly. Good luck. Let us know how what you decide to do.

I went for it! $600 for the machine, a large stash of bobbins and needles and odds and ends, and a clear sewing table for quilting. He had had a few other ladies already in who bought other supplies, so no luck on the rulers and what not. I saw some of the work she did and it was all done on this machine. I was really impressed. I tried to test it to my ability, but was confident that it would be what I needed based on her success and maintenance. Thanks for your help!

Welcome to PR. Congratulations on providing a home for a machine that has already been much loved. Seems like two very caring husbands were involved in the transfer of your 153QE; your machine has a wonderful legacy.

Looking forward to your future posts.
