Need to 'pony up' on this photo sharing business. Am interested in suggestions for a host to use only for sewing shareables. Found this article
Comparisons with a basic comparison grid.

As the title suggests, I am looking for super easy route ......
From iPad
To photo host
To link to post on PR

I prefer.....
Free but that is not mandatory

It must.....
Be user friendly for anyone clicking on the link

It would help if.......
It was easy to use for adding photos to reviews
................

Care to share your favorites? From the standpoint of your personal use or from the perspective of a PR member clicking on links?

Reserving this spot for recapping input if there are responses.

I use both Photobucket and Flickr on my iPad, Android cell phone, and on the computer. General overall statement: I use Flickr for sharing photos and for storing photos for my pattern reviews. I use Photobucket to get a picture onto the internet/my computer so it can be used elsewhere/edited with software. I do not use Photobucket for sharing pictures.

Thoughts.....
Photobucket:
Cons: The over abundance of advertisements bothers me. I don't like the seemingly forced social network side. The website can be confusing to use just to get to your library of images. Moving your image to different albums breaks the link if you have shared it anywhere. Too much going on its website for my tastes. When you use the HTML or URL links the site provides you, you link to the image in the album rather than the image alone, individually. This bothers me because I don't always want people to have access then to all my unprotected images or my account simply by trying to post a direct image link. There USED to be a workaround, but I can't seem to find it anymore and I am halfway decently computer savvy.

Pros: The iPad app is great (although mine has been glitching over the last two or three months). You can set privacy for each album as default, and your "bucket" (default album) also has it's own privacy setting. You can set passwords for individual albums. The android phone app is decent, though sometimes has trouble uploading a bunch of pictures at once.

I don't like to use photobucket as a place to share pictures.

Flickr:
Cons: all your pictures are put into your Photostream. You can't avoid that. You are forced to organize your pictures by Set (which I kind of like and prefer). Social network aspect. (Can't I just host my pictures?!) For the most part people don't comment on or seem to view my pattern review pictures that much. Downloading a full view of one of your pictures onto your computer takes multiple steps, which just annoys me a little. No iPad app, though the iPhone app and the website both work on the iPad.

Pros: You can put one picture in multiple sets. (Ie, pattern reviews, things I made, and 2013 for example.) Tons of storage. Can set privacy on individual photos. I like their tagging system for pictures, but you dont have to use it. I like the Photostream. The linking and HTML code grabbing works really well.

I really like using Flickr.

Of the ones mentioned in that link, these are the two I've had the most experience with. I hope this helps!!

2014 resolution: keep track of sewn yardage!! I'm subtracting fabric given away from my yardage in. Yeah!
In: 99.75 yards
Sewn: 77.5 yards

I'll try anything once :)

Please excuse my typos...sometimes it is harder to go back and edit on mobile than it is worth!

I'm kinda disappointed in the article because it downplays how nice it is to just have your own domain on self-hosted space with Wordpress installed. The author kind of threw that in there at the end instead of focusing on it being one of the better (IMO) options.

There are nice, easy-to-use features in Wordpress that let you edit a picture (crop, scale down it's web data size).

More than that, it's nice sharing the work and being able to talk about it.

HanPanda, thank you for your time explaining the pros/cons between PhotoBucket and Flickr. They are the ones that I see used most often on PR so it made sense to consider them first. Yes, your post is very helpful! Thank you.

RipStitcher, thank you for your comment on creating a personal domain. I should do this when the focus of my/our schedule changes. Appreciate your post here as it will be easy to find for the 'next step'. Crazy about your selvage projects, btw.

I understand the reason why PR is not a photo "host". It would be nice if there was an outside PR host for our photos....just for PR reviews. I don't have a very good sense of this hosting business, obviously....but that seems logical.

Thank you for starting this discussion. I've been avoiding the whole online photo storage thing because of some of the issues that Han Panda mentions, but the information being shared here is very helpful.

And thanks to everyone who contributes so that others can learn from their experience.

I have used Photobucket for about 10 years I think. More ads than there used to be but it's so simple to use. You need to set your Library as 'private' to avoid sharing more than intended.
