I went to JA's and bought a 6" by I think 14". Should I have bought the 24" long ruler instead? The quilting rulers were half off the regular price. I'm questioning myself. I don't know how long the sale will last. Of course, if I need to buy another one I can use a coupon. What is everybody's take?

Thanks!

I have about 30 rulers, so I wouldn't be able to figure how you got a wrong one. Is it for something specific?

Everyone works differently. I use my 6x12 ruler all the time, and hardly ever use my 6x24, although when I need it I find it useful.

The rulers I use most are my 4x8, and my 6.5 and 9.5 inch squares.

I don't think there is any such thing as a *wrong* ruler. If you think you need another one, get it. No such thing as too many!!!

My ruler collection is quite large, ahem. I think you can make good work with the size you have. It would not hurt to get some more rulers as you will find they all have their specific uses. I recently started to replace some of my rulers as my older rulers began to slip regardless of how I tried to mitigate that problem. I love Creative Grid Rulers (nayy) and find they really hold the fabric extremely well. Before you go out and buy more, consider this brand. You can find them on amazon for reasonable prices. Besides the long rulers consider square rulers too because they are excellent for squaring blocks.

Creative Grids Rulers

When I started to replace my rulers I did it very very slowly and would only get the ruler if I had a large cutting project and need a specific size. I now own about 8 CG rulers and still plan on a few more.

There are products to get that help with ruler slipage... some popular products are below. I'm sure other folk here can chine it on this too.

I also love creative grid rulers. I have several. I also have an ofla I never use . I have a 4 x 4 square I thought I would never use and it is my 2nd favorite ruler. I seldom use my 12.5 x 12.5 square. I love my 6.5 square ruler. Rulers come in all sizes and you have to find what you like. Find a creative grid ruler and you will love it. Easy to read and it does not slip much.

What brand did you buy? 6 x 14 is one I do not own. You will need a 6 x 24 for cross cutting fabric and for squaring up.

I am a Quilter at heart. I love to play with fabrics, patterns and colors. Recently I have discovered I enjoy doing applique. I love making pictures. Using a sewing machine is much easier than counted cross stitch or oil painting for me. I enjoy landscape quilting as well. I am working on my first applique project in the spring of 2014.

Last year I got a 6" X 24" grid ruler and now I don't know how I ever lived without it. My 2" X 15" is handy for small jobs and the french curve has been a must have for years for alterations and pattern making.

I have a variety of ruler sizes that I use depending on the project. However, my 6 1/2" x 24" ruler probably gets more use than any other because I use it to cut quilt binding and any other time I need to cut across the width of my fabric.
