Ahggwww, just when i thought i was on a roll, i hit this brick wall. Maybe i should post this in the beginner forum, since it's probably all crystal clear to you. Here's the thing:

http://outofthebluecreations.wordpress.com/2014/01/19/current-project-ottobre-110-14-girls-coat-2/img_1201/#main

How can i under stitch the armhole if i already stitched (as instructed in this very step) front opening and neck? I don't get it! Shouldn't i have first stitched the armhole, under stitch, and THEN continue to stitch front opening and neck?

What am i not getting? Thanks in advance!

I use my zipper foot to understitch in tricky areas where your foot does not have much room. Hopefully this will allow you to get pretty close to the shoulder seam.

I agree, it would make more sense for the instructions to tell you to understitch in advance of joining the two pieces at the shoulder seam. This isn't the first pattern I've come across with this type of instruction.

It's O.K., you can still do that, you just have to pull your fabric layers apart a bit to get into it. And make sure to try to clip and grade and notch and press it right first. And just stitch as far as you can. However far that is. Any stitching like that there is better than just none at all. That happens when you understitch all sorts of things sometimes. You may not be always able to understitch something completely. But any you get in there, is better for holding something together than just none at all. But the other really good thing about understitching some fabric to a lining or facing, is it's just for structure and won't show on the outside and garment surface at all, and not at all, top stitching anything instead. So you don't need to be as picky about it being complete or even being perfect at all either, as sometimes on somethings it's just not even possible, like at the underneath part of arm holes on that pattern even.

You can understitch by hand if it is difficult to reach with the machine.
I have installed zippers and understitched many garments completely by hand.

I agree with others, this is one of those times either go as far as you can and be pleased with that. If you just have to do it just right, then do it by hand.....
