What are some tips to make the pleats look neat?

The back looks like gathering rather than pleats, so you could run a basting thread through that part of the seam allowance, then gather until you get the result you want. For the front pleating, if you don't like to pin, you could baste them in place, press in the direction shown near the top of the pleats, and then sew. The pleats are not pressed down all the way to give it a softer look. Very pretty shirt pattern!
